advice on aiming
So I get this game has a kind of lock on system but its hard to tell what exactly I am doing.

Am I correct in thinking that headshots only matter when your close up and aiming up toward a zombie/enemy, aiming straight is just torso shots and aiming down is for when they are close and on the floor?

For instance when I fought the first boss "stinger" when aiming dead ahead it seemed to just hit his body (making a ping noise). When he was up close even if I shot more toward his arm I think it was doing headshot damage so my guess is it locks onto the head automatically since I am aiming in the "correct" way.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Aim up at the enemies standing above you, aim down at the crawling and small enemies next to you. Aiming down you will not hit the dog at the other end of the room. In this case, use neutral aiming, and when the dog is next to you, then aim down.

The character automatically aims at the nearest enemy, but if you want to aim at another there is a button to change the target.

You can kill zombies with headshots if you let them get close to you and aim up with a shotgun.

I don't remember exactly about RE0, but in other "classic" RE games the handgun has a small chance of critical damage when a simple shot turns into a headshot (without having to aim up).

cheers this helps a lot. I know people have covered the topic before but its usually a particular question about aiming and not just in general. Only ever played RE1 before with this old style of aim and that was years ago with a guide and trying to do this one blind but I am too used to the aiming of 4 onward. Thanks again
