Start with REHDR that's the first one. Playing them by release order is better than chronological order IMO because some are meant to be prequels.

Yes. Zero takes place just prior to the start of RE1.

If you want to experience the serie adequately, its RE1 HD you should start with.

In the RE timeline 0's events happen first (one day before, iinm) because her team was on the ground before it needed rescuing but thats not important. 0 has some mechanics that diverge from the rest of the RE games and could sour you on the serie if its the first game you play.

Its better to experience Zero at least after the first 3 games and including code veronica if you want to go all in on the story. I recommend playing it regardless

I'm playing the series for the first time and played RE2 just to see if I liked the story. It's got me invested enough to play through RE0 and do everything in chronological order.

You can start here and you'll be just fine. Personally, I'd start with 1 then 0,2,3 etc....

Start with Zero and work though them for best experience. Don't forget to play the Revelation titles as well as they are a filler between some main games.

Story-wise it's the first one, but it actually was released after a few previous titles.

If this is your first Resident Evil game or first 'original formula' Resident Evil game, be warned that this game is quite difficult and has some questionable mechanics like control of two characters and lack of storage boxes which is not the case in other 'original formula' Resident Evil games.

So in case you end up hating it, don't judge the whole franchise by it and try some other Resident Evil titles.

P.S. Starting with earlier titles might prepare you better for RE:0, because they are easier.
