My least favorite Resident Evil.
I don't like the mechanics with "An extra guy tagging along", I prefer to be by myself.
I'd recommend you getting Resident Evil 1 more.
The partner system is something that requires "accustoming". You can leave the partner behind whenever you want but that will limit your already very small inventory and your options in some puzzles. Having the partner around fixes that but since the A.I. is very basic and will run into any enemy head first its not without risk, too.
But I guess the main reason its often titled as weak entry is because it doesn't deliver anything new besides those two game mechanics.
Sure, its starts great with the train but right after that you get (again) the mansion- like area, the obligatory labs and (as always) some factory assets. Zombies, Dogs, Hunters and some oversized animals as bosses. Backgrounds for those? Naaw.
Some puzzles in the typical RE- style (mixture between easy, weird and/or pointless) and a little more lore which is (sadly) packed into some very cringy cutscenes. Even for Resident Evil standards...some of those are almost on the same level as RE1 or Gun Survivor.
All that beeing said its not a bad game. If you like the classic REs you will most likely have fun with this one, too. It contains pretty much everything that a classic RE requires. It just never shines in any of these aspects.
It's a classic RE game with a few gameplay twists, which I personally welcome, because I appreciate when games of a franchise innovate without screwing up the premise and the core gameplay, like RE0 and the Outbreak series did.
But some games are more popular than others (which doesn't necessarily mean they're factually better), and everyone has their least favorites. Mine, out of the classics, is RE3, but RE0 is usually an easy pick because many fans didn't like the AI partner or the item drop mechanic.
I have extensive thoughts but in short it's not as amazing as it should've been.
It's a prequel to the first installment that feels entirely underutilized since the first remake set the bar high. There's setbacks regarding inventory management, constantly switching characters, the lack of bonus content, and overall feeling like it should've been the introduction to the franchise but under different management.
Newcomers would be fine but longtime fans would probably find this zombie bite less contagious.
It's still a decent enough game, but it's the bosses that are arguably the worst. The rest is decent enough. I'd take it over RE7 any day of the week.
It's a problem because it's annoying and forces players to constantly prolong their backtracking when they're not intending too. Also, some items we're expected to find are especially missing during major checkpoints. Switching between two characters at a time also becomes a hassle when it's blatant one character could've easily completed particular areas alone without help.
The game is purposely designed for two people but lacking actual cooperative options without the CPU. If Capcom allowed players around the globe to somehow connect it would make the game at least more immersible. Yes, there was potential but ultimately a giant step backwards from the first REmake in terms of mechanics and content.
Also, at least RE7 seemed lesser as a tedious chore than this installment.
I actually find the item drop mechanics from RE0 and Outbreak more immersive and challenging for a Survival Horror experience than a magical storage device teleporting items to my convenience. That's why I also love Real Survival mode from RE Remake, I wish all RE games had at least an optional mode with features like these.
