As for whether or not this is the right game for you it depends on what you want in a game so I'd advise having a look online for gameplay videos to see if this is something you may enjoy.
The story isn't terribly long. Extreme playthroughs take me around 30 hours to 100% the save. Character development and the overall story is kind of meh. Really the only negative I have.
It's subjective. Some like it some hate it. Won't know for certain until you try it. As an added bonus there is gamepad support but I prefer kb&m.
It's a decent game and worth a playthrough.
Essentially, because Spiders is a small production company with limited budgets, but players expect them to make AAA games, and get angry when they realize it's not like that
Given the scarce resources they have, they manage to make remarkable titles; I really appreciated both Mars War Logs and The Technomancer
When the combat melee dissolves into a mass of limbs and the camera goes wild and the panic key-presses kick in, it's a nightmare.
The game is designed for a controller, the combat moves are queued, meaning that if you hit your mouse button four times, well... you're going to try to attack four times until you're interrupted. Other than that the areas (while beautiful) are in reality tiny and it suffers a bit too much from consolisation. e.g. the crafting system is very simple, the loot progession is strictly locked to zones and the areas are all designed with large "bumper zones" to allow fat-fingered console players room to turn corners.
At the sale price of $10, it's worth it. Just remember: don't spam attacks, be precise. And use F5 constantly, combat is random enough that at some point it *will* just fall apart into a death you cannot avoid.
The map/locations can be confusing at times until you get more familiar with it. Making it open world would have made easier to get around.
Combat is a bit too samey and unforgiving unless you play on easy difficulty. Even then it can be hard since it seems buggy and/or broken at times.
Graphics and level design seems to be its only strong point.
Story and characters are meh since the voice acting is mediocre most of the time.
Buy it cheap or pass.
Ive tried to get into this game 3 or 4 times, and everytime become bored not too long after being given the freedom around the city.. I actually fall asleep playing it.. once getting started, there are icons on the map, that arent explained very well, and its easy to accidentally start side missions.. While I was never able to progress very far (for previous mentioned reasons) others say the back tracking is way overdone.. Constantly slow walking back and forth through the same areas over, and over, and over again.. Even positive reviews had difficulty with the backtracking.. This company is also known for terrible combat mechanics, and Ill never understand why they dont change it. I have disliked every single Spider game Ive bought.
Its just not well done. I probably could have pushed through to enjoy the story, if the combat wasnt SO atrocious.. but its really bad! Even on lower difficulty, combat can be quite unforgiving.
Edit: I knew full well Spiders is a small team, with a small budget.. I had low expectations going in, as I too bought it on sale for $7, and was STILL disappointed.. I a huge rpg lover, and thought I would still get atleast a play through out of it.. I was wrong!
I can only give you my reason for my not recommended review.. unlike some other people ,I wont claim to know the reason for others' opinion/experience, nor will i attempt to discred theirs..
In your opinion.
