The Demo Returns on May 15 — A New Lovecraftian Investigation Experience

The public demo for Expedition to Madness will be available again on May 15.

Over the last few months, I took the demo offline to rebuild one of the most important parts of the game: the investigation experience.

Expedition to Madness has always been about cosmic horror, ancient gods, and exploring hostile dimensions, but the balance was not where I wanted it to be. Before, the experience leaned more heavily toward finding and extracting primordial energy, while supernatural investigation played a smaller role.

That has now changed.

The game is becoming much more focused on what makes this world special: investigating the presence of an ancient Lovecraftian entity, provoking responses, gathering evidence, and identifying what is really haunting each dimension. Energy gathering still matters, but it now supports the mission instead of defining it.

What has changed?

The biggest addition is a brand-new portable investigation scanner.

Previously, many of the game’s systems lived as overlays inside the helmet, and most evidence was passive. You often had to wait for something to happen. I wanted investigation to feel more deliberate, more active, and more tense.

The new scanner now puts those tools directly in the player’s hands and pushes the experience much further toward true paranormal field investigation.

With it, you can:

search for blood symbols with a UV scanner and analyze them for clues
detect voices from beyond reality with an integrated directional sound scanner
project a distortion matrix to glimpse into overlapping dimensions and reveal hidden anomalies
use synthesized tracking frequencies to locate disturbances
scan for primordial energy sources with a V-Radar
navigate using the map now integrated into the scanner itself

Moving these systems out of the visor and into a multi-use handheld tool has opened much more room to improve the overall evidence-hunting experience and gives the investigation loop a much clearer identity.

A stronger Lovecraftian identity

Last year I overhauled the main hub and pushed it toward a colder, retro-industrial sci-fi atmosphere. In this round, I completed the player-side overhaul as well, including the scanner, helmet SFX and VFX, lighting, and overall tactile feel.

Over the next four weeks, I’ll be going even deeper into the identity of the Ancient Gods and the creatures they spawn from the negative dimension.

Right now, each god can be differentiated through three types of evidence. The next step is to give each one more personality, behaviour, and presence, so the investigation is not only about checking evidence types, but also about reading patterns, reactions, and danger.

That means the entities themselves will start to feel more distinct, more intelligent, and more terrifying.

Demo availability and Steam Next Fest

The updated public demo returns on May 15.

It will also be part of Steam Next Fest in June, where you’ll be able to experience this new investigation-focused direction for yourself.

If you’ve been following the game for its mix of cosmic horror, evidence gathering, ancient gods, and hostile dimensions, this is the version that moves much closer to that vision.

Thanks for sticking with the project while I reworked such a core part of the game. I truly believe the game is changing for the better, and I’m excited to finally put this new direction back into your hands.

Made a mistake doing the invocation and things went crazy!

I FINALLY could make the right invocation (I was lucky to face two evidences straight in front of me in the library) and I went into the portal and retrieve the artifact, but the other two times I failed and everything turne Stranger-thingy, and I couldn't find enough energy to go back. Any tips for when you fail the invocation?...

I’m happy to release MAJOR DEMO UPDATE 0.2.60, one of the most ambitious updates to Expedition To Madness so far.

This update focuses on clarity, atmosphere, and systemic depth, with major changes to core gameplay mechanics, UI, environments, entities, and progression systems — while significantly improving performance.

What’s new in Update 0.2.60

🎨 Design & Visual Changes

New Energyros design
New Upgrade Shop and Loadout terminals
Map Tablet redesigned to fully match the game’s vintage CRT aesthetic
New Hexeract mission information map, shown before choosing your destination
Major rework of Innsmouth — best experienced firsthand 👁️

Energy Bars and Cubes redesigned and renamed as Tracers

⚙️ Game Mechanics Updates

Energy Cubes removed from the Hexeract
Invocations simplified:
You now only need to find the altar and select the ancient god you believe is present

👁️ Monsters Rework

Mimic behaviour improved — do not point your flashlight at it
Major entities can now detect your flashlight
- Yes, this includes the Cyclops. Be careful.

📡 Tablet Map Improvements

Minor and major entities remain visible on the map
Once revealed by the blue Energyro pulse, entities stay tracked

🚀 Performance Improvements

Main Hub performance improved by ~10%
Innsmouth performance improved by ~20%
- This allowed the addition of more ambient and atmospheric effects
Overall performance improvements in:
- Helmet UI
- Multitool energy detection

Steam Next Fest — February 23rd

Expedition To Madness will be part of Steam Next Fest on February 23rd.

I’m currently working hard on Demo Version 0.3, which will be the version featured during the festival.
After the fest, development will continue on the remaining dimensions planned for the EA release.

MAJOR DEMO UPDATE 0.2.45 — Worlds variants & New Systems

During the holiday season I was away with my family, but Expedition To Madness never stopped evolving.
Today I’m happy to release Update 0.2.45, the largest demo update so far.

This release focuses on depth, clarity, and replayability, introducing parallel versions of worlds, better player guidance, and new systems that push the experience further into cosmic horror.

A redesigned helmet-based guidance and mission system
Clearer objectives and in-game indicators to support new players throughout their journey

Difficulty levels above WHITE are now parallel realities / variants of the same world
