VR Common Issues and Solutions
Since PTTR VR has just launched, we're encountering many different issues users are having. Some are fixable with different settings, and some we likely need to fix in updates to the game over the coming hours, days and weeks.

I'll continue to update this thread as new issues and solutions are found.

The game won't launch

Solution 1
PTTR VR uses OpenXR which can have different "runtimes" set. When you are not using an Oculus device like the Quest, you will need to ensure that SteamVR is set as the current OpenXR Runtime.

This setting can be found by option the SteamVR window and entering the Settings from the top left 3 line button. Inside the Settings go to the OpenXR page and press the "SET STEAMVR AS OPENXR RUNTIME" button.

If you are using an Oculus device like the Quest, it's not necessary, but is likely best to use Oculus (Meta Quest Link) as the OpenXR runtime. You can set this from the Meta Quest Link application under Settings > General and pressing the "Set Meta Quest Link as act..." button.

If you are using Reshade you may need to disable the post-processing injector in the "OpenXR API Layers".

Solution 2
Verify Integrity of game files. This option can be found by going into the Properties of Paint the Town Red in your Steam library and in the "Installed Files" section pressing the "Verify integrity of game files" button.

Solution 3
Close and reopen Steam. If that doesn't fix it, we have had a user find it began working correctly after they uninstalled and reinstalled Paint the Town Red on Steam.

-----------------------------------------------------

The game crashes while starting up

This is likely an issue with GPU memory and might be fixable by reducing the Render Resolution of your headset. In Meta Quest Link this can be found in the Devices section and in SteamVR Settings under the Video section. In SteamVR change this from Auto to Custom and see if a lower % value allows the game to load. If it does, try increasing the % to find an acceptable working value.

-----------------------------------------------------

My controllers aren't working

Right now the game window needs to have focus for some controller input to be recognised. On your computer either use Alt+Tab to select the game window or click on it and see if that helps.

Another option that has worked for some users is in the Steam VR settings, under Video set Pause VR when Headset is Idle to Off.

-----------------------------------------------------

The in-game hands are further away than my real hands

There's some settings in the Options menu if you scroll through the Game & Input section called "Extend Hand Range" for unarmed, armed and guns.

By default the hand range is extended because most players found this was the preferred way to play, but you can change this to 0.0 to have them match your hand positions exactly.

-----------------------------------------------------

The head is shaking/juttering when playing

We believe the main cause of this issue is fixed in version 1.0.4 which is available now. Please let us know if you previous had the issue and if it is now fixed for you or not.

If you are having this issue please check the suggestions below and then post here so we can more quickly identify the cause: https://steamcommunity.com/app/337320/discussions/0/7128707542437752435/

We believe this is primarily due to players having a framerate lower than the refresh rate of their headset. We're still investigating this, but, here are our current recommendations that have helped some players:

Step 1
If you're using an Oculus device (e.g. Quest), ensure the Meta Quest Link app is set as the current OpenXR runtime. You can set this from the Meta Quest Link application under Settings > General and pressing the "Set Meta Quest Link as act..." button.

Step 2
You may have a low framerate. In the in-game settings under Graphics, you can try disabling antialiasing and lower the Resolution Scale settings to their lowest values (currently 0.7 is the lowest, but we'll allow lower values in an update soon) and see if that reduces or fixes the issue.

Another way to test if the framerate is the problem is to lower the resolution of your headset in Meta Quest Link or SteamVR. In Meta Quest Link this can be set in the Devices section, and in the SteamVR Settings you can find Render Resolution in the Video section, set it to Custom and try a lower %.

Step 3
Disable Asynchronous Spacewarp in the Oculus Debug Tool. This one is particularly effective and likely will drastically improve the issue for anyone with a lower framerate. Here's a YouTube video showing how to find the Oculus Debug Tool and change the setting to disabled: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRu-EWklfq4

There are other applications that can allow you to disable this feature that might be more relevant to your particular setup.

Step 4
In either the Meta Quest Link app for Oculus devices, or the SteamVR settings for other devices, try lower the Refresh Rate for your headset. In the Meta Quest Link app this can be done in the Devices section, and in SteamVR settings this can be changed under General or Video.

If any of these solutions work for you or if you find another solution for the problem then please let us know on these forums here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/337320/discussions/0/7128707542437752435/
