During the adventure you will find points on the wall that look like a face with two eyes and an open mouth, there you have to insert the Pharros stones which will make a bright door appear nearby that can be opened by attacking it with treasures inside. The first one you encounter is in the first area the forest of fallen giants, inside the fortress in a room with the ballistae; while the first stone of Pharros to unlock the mechanism you can buy it from the npg of the "witch" near the second bonefire of the area.
Just sucks there's no gameplay tutorial for it, like the game telling you to inspect your envionment sometimes or something.
Since the original poster is new: once you get access to a "Fragrant Branch of Yore", go back to the entrance of Majula (as your coming from Things Betwixt) and go down the other path (as you enter Majulra from the tunnel, turn left around the rocky wall and you enter a new tunnel). You'll find a swordsman sitting on the ground holding a fake Moonlight Greatsword, and a statue in the shrine behind him. Unpetrifying this statue with the Fragrant Branch of Yore allows you to get into the Shaded Woods, and has the bonus of unlocking the Pyromancy merchant.
Note, that to get the entrance to the Shaded Woods to "open", you have to close the door you opened (the one the statue was blocking). I found the Shaded Woods pretty early on, but never actually entered it until endgame-ish, because I didn't know how to operate the doors. Also, I'm not spoiling anything about this area, just mentioning how to get the ring, because it can save you a LOT of frustration with this game.
The Shaded Woods are a bit tough early game, but you don't have to kill any of the enemies; just run past them to the 2nd bonfire in the Shaded Woods. There will be 3 paths there at the top of strairs: take the right one into the "foggy area". Basically, just run straight through to the back of the fog and once you find the cliff, follow the wall left, where you'll find a ramp with a small ledge. Travel along the ledge to find a chest with the Cloranthy Ring +1 inside.
You save yourself a Pharros Key this way (unless you really need that Titanite Slab, but there are other ways to get those, and you don't need many), as Pharros Keys are common later on, but kind of rare early game. Also, a lot of areas have one or two Pharros Doors, those are okay to open, but there are at least 2 areas in the game which have a bunch of Pharros Doors that don't have anything useful inside them (or unlock traps for use in PvP for specific Covenants).
The Cloranthy Ring is pretty much useful for any character build (at the very least, it helps you get back Stamina to dodge roll), and obviously the +1 is better, so if you got a spare Branch, it's worth the quick detour. There are some other neat things (I believe the basilisks in this area can be used to farm Infusion Stones pretty easy, although you can fight those in Things Betwixt if you used your Branch there, too), but I'll leave the more elaborate things for you to discover.
One of the things I love so much about DS2 over DS1, is that it's got a more metroidvania feel to it, because of the Branches and Pharros Keys. There's a ton of secrets too. When I started my second character, there are like a dozen little areas that I didn't notice on my first character.
