[Solved] Recover Save Game?
Hey guys! Hope all is well for yall!

I reformatted my computer, I still have the sl2 files of my original DS2 and SOTFS saves. However, replacing them gives me the "Game data is corrupt" message and asks me to basically delete it and repair.

Now, I'm not as worried about having to do the 100 hours of gameplay again as much as I am having to sit there and RE-make those characters. Took me a long time to get their looks just right. I may just not touch the game again if I honestly have to redo that anytime I reformat or move to a new hard drive. Considering this game doesn't allow Steam Cloud.

Please, someone come to me with a saving grace.

Do you simply paste the backup you had made in the folder where are dark souls 2 save?

If you made this it's normal it doesn't work, it's a more complicate method to use the backups in this cases. I don't remember how it's exactly, but you can search on the internet.

i only can give you a bit of hope.

MAKE IT OFFLINE

1-Create a new game and exit.
2- In the main menu press start and just wait on the menu (which appears Continue New Game, etc.). Press Alt + Tab.
3-Now locate your saved game (C: \ Users \ YourUserName \ AppData \ Roaming \ DarkSoulsII)
4-There should be a folders named with numbers.Copy your backup in the folder just created.
5-Now back to the game and hit Continue. Load the game that appears and the game will tell you not be loaded. Now your characters appear old saved game.
6-charge with one of your characters that appear and the game will tell you that it can't load.
7-Step back and give new game.Exit and now yo can use characters of your old saves.

Hope it works.

OMG Thank you so much it worked! It's never worked before. Maybe it's 'cause I didn't go offline or something. Ah! You're amazing! SO MANY HOURS SAVED!

Sale your sl2 file. Otherwise you're boned.
Really really boned. Make more than 1. Put in safe spot.
Like a thumb drive. Just in case. . .

add [savefile] to a copy. make a copy of that then remove [savefile]. That's a good way to keep a file. You can name them different things too, like [gitgud].

Can someone explain this a little bit better? I just had my save corrupted by some random annoying crash. I'm not sure what this guy is explaining from step 4 to 7.

Really all you need to do is locate that file and insert your .sl2 with the proper save data. OR dl2 or whatever it's called.

I'm trying this right now with little luck. I screwed up Windows and had to reinstall it. But it saved all my app data including my old save.

I think i'm doing all the steps right.
1. I'm offline,
2. I created a new game and exited,
3. Got back to the menu and hit Alt Tab,
4. Copied the old save into the correct folder and it overwrites it,
5. Then i go back to the game and hit Continue and it tells me it can't be loaded,
6. This is the step that is not working. I found the same instructions on another site, it says to continue your save and it will fail and it backs out and you are suppose to see your old saves on the list, but all i see is the new one i just made.
7. If i do this without step 6 both save files are just brand new files at Level 1.

Did they patch this out?

Also helps if you backup important save game progress before issues happen.

I know, I know, its a PITA and I need to do it more often as well, but still, if your save games matter to you as I know they do in DS series, well, then...

If available do NOT use steam cloud, on many forums somebody always posts about corrupt save game from steam cloud, and many have onedrive issues as well. Cloud is not good for game files.
