2D Dark Souls esque games
Keeping a thread of games similar to Dark Souls but in 2D.

My favorite is Volgarr the Viking, the game looks different aesthetically and misses stats/equipment whatsoever. It's a fiendishly difficult 2D platformer where each slash counts, you "learn" the levels by playing again and again and again, and the controls are TIGHT. Honestly I love it so much I'd even rate it ABOVE Dark Souls personally.

Another great one is Death's Gambit: Personally I think it doesn't look quite as good as Volgarr yet but it looks like it has a great amount of potential. Too bad the release date is some ways off.

Vagante, best 2d rogue like that reminds me of DS ever.

What about Rogues Legacy? 2D unforgiving and slightly punishing melee focused combat and focused on both plataforming and exploration

dwarf fortress? i dunno, not a whole lot of games "like dark souls" in my opinion since accurate swordplay is one of the cornerstones of it in my opinion, also platformer is such a dirty word to me these days, too many failed braid wannabes.

what's the top down 1-hit KO game that's sorta the same premise? where it's all awesome boss fights and skill matters more than anything else? i haven't played it, but it is a bit similar and i was kinda tempted to play it, to my surprise even though there's not really enough depth to keep me interested.

What you say sounds like Volgarr, but I guesse you already read the OP? If it's not that I don't know.

Love that game, nice 1.

"Cough* Castlevania on NES.

I never beaten Castlevania III.
I dare you to play it - you will come back to Dark Souls crying, while happy about how fair and upbeat it is.

Rogue Legacy is definitely similar to Dark Souls in many ways. Though if you want great difficulty combined with learning, evasion, story telling, variety of equipment I would suggest you try out Bastion, its not completely 2D, the models are 3D but yeah. With all the shrine bonuses enabled that game is stupidly hard.

Naming an oldie is kinda cheating. Considering the oldies are what all of these games are based on anyway.

Btw, another great one, Maximo. It's a 3D platformer, but a damn great one.
