Confused on how to enter the DLC
I keep reading online that I need to get keys to access the DLC, but the portals (fountains) that lead to the DLC seemed to be accessable. Why do I need the keys?

For the door after using the fountain.
in the original ds2 you get the key instantly after buy dlc. use the fountain portal and open the door with the key. the reason you can access the fountain without key is because there is room with summon sign hub that even if you never buy dlc you can put the summon sign there and your friend with dlc can see it on the other side of the door.

In sotfs everyone has dlc so the summon hub is useless. but you need to find the key instead of instantly get it.

one in iron keep on corpse in front of fire breathing statue
one in locked door in the big hole at majula (defeat hidden giant in gutter first)
one in drangleic castle few meter from first bonfire

Actually the key that you get at the iron keep is not the one for the dlc, its just the key needed to open the door on the forest of fallen giants where the salamanders are, and the DLC key is on the salamanders room on a corpse with the rebels shield.

Also, you can either use fall damage reduction items or have enough hp and make a jump attack on one salamander and get that DLC key w/o the iron keep key
