Fight every enemy along the way, every time. This isn't like other soulsborne games, don't disrespect the enemies along the way, you WILL be punished for it.
Conversely if you fight the enemies every time you will be rewarded for it. They stop spawning after 12 deaths, so if you're struggling, things will get easier and easier as the enemies you kill along the way stop showing up.
incorrect.
Kill them once on the way too the boss, and then if you die to the boss or at any point along the way, kill them again on the way to the boss again. Be persistent.
If you are struggling and are having a hard time with your boss encounter, then game will reward your persistence by gradually removing the threats to the boss along the way.
Getting the enemies to despawn is not the goal, your goal is still "Get to the boss". The enemies despawning is your reward for being persistent and not disrespecting the enemies between the bonfire and the boss.
Being swarmed and overrun at the fog door is your punishment for disrespecting the enemies and trying to be lazy.
Are we back in the dark ages (lol) of Dark Souls, where other people chime in on the "right" way to play a single player game?
When I did speedruns, nobody cared that I ran past enemies, and I wasn't punished for it because I know what I'm doing.
If someone else wants to despawn the map, they can absolutely do that. If someone wants to play slow and patient, that's an option too. They're all correct ways. I'm surprised I have to say this in 2024 lmfao.
Alluring Skulls and Yearn work on the Hollows, that ring the bells (though skulls aren't that great here, since their duration is short and hollows immediately start aggroing the bells again). Yearn especially might be the most broken PvE spell at places with enemies weak to it (which are most places, especially at the DLC). And if you get hit, spam Lifegems.
All i know is i've seen people trying to run past the enemies to get to the boss while yelling and getting mad and calling the game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ because they're getting overcrowded, or can't get past an enemies hitbox, or this and that or the other thing.
Meanwhile i just fight everything one at a time along the way and make it to the boss room in one life, while they die no less then five times in the same amount of time.
I'm just working on experience here. Fighting enemies = good time, ignoring enemies = bad time.
Except..... This game literally punishes you harder than any other game for fighting every enemy with soul memory.... The game can be run through I do it all the time. The game is just as frustrating wether or not you just got hit by the dragonrider on your 15th run to velstadt, or you died on the last turtle golem of Iron Keep after wiping out every other enemy after getting invaded by forlorn. I'd actually argue the second is a lot more frustrating and punishing.
Soul memmory is really only a punishment if you're trying to remain within a spesific teir. in which case, you can just put on the agape ring.
For everyone else, that's extra money you're getting with each attempt.
So I have to sacrifice a ring slot in order to fight every enemy? Sounds a lot more punishing to me than just running through.
It is made to annoy you.
Today I killed the Fume Knight for the first time, he was the only boss so far that killed me more than 5 times - he did it like 25 times lol.
Then I went to see Blue Smelter. After reaching him once and seeing the path to him, I just left.
So I went to see Alonne. After reaching him once and dying, I said ♥♥♥♥ it and I don't plan to go back to this DLC. Not because it is hard, but because it is STUPIDLY annoying at every step. It is one thing to place enemies on the way to the boss, it is another thing to SPAM enemies on the way and make it purposefully impossible to go around them - either by adding mages/slowing enemies in unreachable places to mess you up or literally placing enemies in the doorframe.
"Just kill them 12 times, easy" hell no, I have other games to play. This is not a solution, this is a band-aid they put in place after someone realized how stupid some of the runs to bosses are.
oh no, a whole 3 seconds to swap rings before leaving the bonfire and before entering the fog door, such horror.
You can also just go through without the agape ring, that's also valid, i do it all the time. Really only need to worry about it if you're worried about soul memory, in which case you'd probably be wearing it anyways, because boss deaths provide a lot more souls then the enemies leading up to them do.
Also no one is saying kill them 12 times.
just saying if you DO need to fight the boss 12 or more times, then if you fought your way there, the enemies will stop spawning and you'll have an easier time getting to the boss as a reward for your persistence. whereas if you didn't, then you'll need to spend all that time energy and resources dodging them again when you don't need too.
In the higher tiers, SM is even much more generous, than DS1's. Only need 7M with NER and Small Sign (9M with regular white sign) to co-op with 999M, which is insane. You'll "only" need around 500M for max level and at 7M, you might not even be at SL220 yet. So the effective SL range roughly becomes something like SL220-838. Almost like PW matchmaking w/o downscaling.
If you ever reach a point, where the Soul Memory matters (you make dedicated invader/co-op characters for chokepoints, like Forest or Drangleic Castle), you already know about and will use Agape Ring and NER. DS2 being spread so thin between 150k and 1M SM as well as anything beyond 2M is a much bigger issue - there are so many areas and only so many people looking for PvP and co-op. For PvP duels, SM doesn't matter at all, since BoB-arena doesn't use SM for matchmaking. For invasions, you pretty much have to use Blue Acolyte, due to the low player numbers in order to invade infinitely upwards, so hosts will likely be higher level which often won't be a problem.
