best place to get dragon scales?

You can't get them as drops... Only through killing the dragons in the Aerie... and Pvp'ing other ppl as a dragon remenant

the dragons are easy to kill but never drop scales

Lair of the Imperfect, got enough scales to max out Dragon Remnants in 4 or 5 ascetics. But it's boring + relatively painful.

I recommend joining the CoC instead of using ascetics. Infinite respawn without increasing the bonfire intensity.

To fight the beasts, try some form of ranged attack or a twinblade that is fast and hits hard.

They do drop things like their weapons and dragon scales but you want to stack up on item discover since they are at the rare / extra rare end of the loot spectrum

Just cheese them by luring them to the door, close the door before them and then use poison fog.

This. Also, lightning arrows (from my experience lightning deals a bit more damage to them). But you're gonna need a lot of those.

Your best bet if you don't mind PvP is to go to the Threshold Bridge in Iron Keep, and either summon other Dragonbros or put your own Dragon Eye/Sign/thing down and wait for people to summon you. If you can win more than 50% of your duels then you'll have 20 scales in no time!

The best part is that you don't lose scales when you fail a fight, so you can keep chugging along until you get them all. I assure you, provided you know how to swing a sword (a lot of Dragonbro PvP'ers are incredibly bad) you'll get the scales much faster than farming them elsewhere.

Another Option would be farming that one scale after the guardian dragon boss fight - you just need enough ascetics for that. Also i would recomment high fire resistance + ranged weapon for the fight itself on higher bonfire intensities
also from the secret bonfire you can just run through to the boss without fighting anything
