new to Dark Souls, how to save?
Hey,

I beat the first boss by means of him falling off the cliff. Then I went back to the bonfire and rested thinking that next time I opened the game, I wouldn't have to fight him again. But he was there again. I just want to avoid this from happening again. TY

Only a small handful of enemies don't respawn after death, whatever you killed was just a normal enemy.

no save. your all moves will automatically saves. you will see in right top to save fire. If it is there again, you left without save. I think it's a mistake or you playing offline. in offline you must see save fire in right top

To trigger the save, do I have to move forward to the next boss? I didn't really advance after he fell off, I just turned around

Dark Souls autosaves itself any time you do basically anything. Unless something catastrophic happens that makes the game crash to desktop (or you force-close it with Alt-F4), you can safely assume that everything always saves.

then why didn't it save after the boss fell off the cliff? Is it because I did not kill him properly? Honestly wondering because what you just said is contradictory to what I experienced, thanks

Do you think you could describe this enemy to me? I have a hunch that what you killed may not actually be a boss, but I'd have to know more to be sure.

All the Souls games are pick up right where you left off. The only times you won't start immediately where you left off on loading the game are if you quit in the middle of a boss fight, are engaged in multiplayer as a phantom, or if you disconnected you might go back a few seconds.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

What I was referring to is literally the first enemy you encounter in the whole game. Sorry, I called him a boss because he's hard AF to beat for me. I see, normal enemies respawn after death. Question solved! 😁 Maybe I should just run by the small guys if they keep respawning anyway?

For Dark Souls 2, enemies will only respawn 11 more times after first being killed (so total of 12 lives), unless you joined the covenant of champions in Majula. It's fine to run past them, but equally beneficial to kill them for souls if you think you can use them before you lose them.

That strategy would work in Dark Souls 1 or Dark Souls 3. Not so here: In Dark Souls 2, enemies will hunt you down if you run by them, meaning that you'll rapidly accumulate an overwhelming horde of enemies at your tail if you beeline directly for the boss every time.

It works even better here, thanks to Alluring Skulls and Yearn being gamebreakingly OP on many areas (seriously, try Yearn the next time you're doing the DLC) or NPC summons here and there on half-way points, like Bradley or Schmidt taking aggro.

If anything, if you're playing the game for the first time, you should try fighting for the extra souls, potential loot and most importantly, gameplay experience and DS2 does throw you a bone by de-spawning regular enemies eventually, so it won't become too much of a slog.

Then mark that post as answering your thread.

And yes, running past some\many\most mob enemies is a well-worn Dark Souls tradition. Good luck.

One thing I found funny is how people have made fun of Ds2 ai and pathfinding.
But besides specific places I have often found them incredibly competent at just navigating maps most of the times (not counting them attacking themselves off edges dragon rider style).
