Does armor matter?
It seems that I have to invest a lot of levels into vitality for the equipment load of heavier armor. But I can't really block a lot of hits anyway. Is it worth investing for heavier armor? I'm not really seeing the benefit. Is it better just to use lighter armors? Currently using the amazing Throne Defender set (mostly for looks though).

tl;dr is it worth investing into heavier armors or is the benefit not worth it?

Are You talking about PvP? If so then Yes. Like 90% of people in PvP use some sort of weapon and what comes with it physical damage(with few exeptions). Ring of Soldier(increase equip) +2 and 3rd dragon ring and You should not have problems with fat rolling. Of course You will encounter people using elemental infusions and buffs so if You really want to be tanky then You will waste ring slots. This is just theory. From my experience heavy armor will not help You much, maybe You will be able to take 2 or 3 more hits from elemental buffed weapons.

No, go for light armor and much health.
In PvP the Blue Tearstone Ring is pretty good.
In PvE just a greatshield to block everything that can be safely blocked.

Armor is 99% useless. Trust me.

The only benfit heavy armor has is poise which isn't useful in PVP unless you have high amount. What really matters are elemental resists due to the damage formula.

As has been said, invest in more VGR and chuck on the blue tearstone ring. There are individual light armor pieces out there that have huge defense:weight ratios like the monastery longshirt, and at the end of the day your stamina regeneration is alot faster if you aren't at 69% load. Rolls are also longer the lower % load you go, and in certain situations, increasing load with heavy armor will be largely detrimental (fighting fume knight for instance)

Just use what looks cool

I used to wear mid-heavy armor, then, when I started in pvp, I threw that heavy ♥♥♥♥ through the window. Now I use light armor with a mid chest. In my experience in pvp, poise/heavy armor<rolling.

Depends if you want PVP or PVE... PVE... armor is ♥♥♥♥. Shield is good if you want to Sword and Board unless you want to dodge. Depends on what you want. And What you are doing.

Heavy armor is only for poise.

Light armor is basically fashion, apart from Black Witch, Chaos and Saint`s sets that provide good ele resistances.

when starting the fatal shots (NG10) good armor can make a difference

Nope. I have a NG+7 character with light armor and a buddy has one with medium-heavy and we both take like 2,000 damage from a single stronger attack from anything that's better than a trashmob. Especially in the DLC.

i was in ng + 12 with a friend ....well .... we both had to change light to medium armor: Sir alonne (for example) has a deadly attack that resets the 99 in the statistics....you can survive only with that magic ...denial (????)

The armor itself makes little difference. It is there, but it isn't much unless you ironclad you in the thickest of armor.
The main benefit is Poise, which you usualy get from mid to heavy armor. Donwside: It also makes you slow if you don't invest in vit.
I tend to go for light stylish armor and rely on not getting hit as much.

Okay, so I read all of your comments and I think I get it. What armor set would you recommend for my cleric? I use lightning infused weapons but I mainly focus on melee combat if that helps. I have like 50 faith, 25 strength, 20 dex, 21 vit, 20 adp, 15 att, 4 int, 18 end and 15 vit or something along those lines.. Is my build ♥♥♥♥?

I'd level up ADP and ATT so that you get 105 AGl. Also, why 15 ATT? One more and you've another spell slot. Right now it's just 2 levels wasted.
Besides that, it's fine.

And just go for fashion. Most light armors have decent elemental defenses and that's what you want to look for. If you want some inspirations, just ask.

the most recommended armor is Alvas armor .. you get it by spending 16k souls at the armorer in majula and than buy it from him (after resting at the bonfire) ... it is medium armor and has one of the best if not the best weight / defense ratings ..doesn't look to bad ...
Armor of Auros (gutter) is also nice ...
But I would recommend wearing what you like ...you have to look at your character through out your whole playthrough .. we don't want that ass to look bad do we?
