Getting across Dragon Aerie's bridge?

So I recently picked Dark Souls; Scholar of the First Sin up during a Steam sale, and I know there's been various changes from the base game, which I have played to completion before on PS3.

After reaching Dragon Aerie on my first playthrough of SotFS, I'm having trouble crossing the long, narrow bridge to the second part of the area, I'll reach about 3/4s of the way each time, then a dragon will land on the bridge, stunning me and dropping me to my death.

I remember originally this was supposedly based on the number of dragon eggs in the area broken, but after dying twice and sitting at a bonfire to make sure the eggs reappeared intact, I still can't pass the bridge. I thought it might be based on any dragons left alive in the area instead, but I killed all three of the drakes between the bonfire and bridge, and I don't remember any others.

Reload area by leaving and returning, relaunch DS2SOTFS, Go up the ladder from the bonfire and use the zipline, you will be at that bridge without any chance of destroying eggs.
