What level should I lock myself for DLC coop?
What is the optimal level for coop/invasions in the DLC areas?

My general advice is that unless you are gonna do dumb crap (like myself used to do when I was still active on the game) is to stay bellow 5 million, that is where you'll find the largest "high" SM player pool.

I just realized Dark Souls 2 works with Souls Memory, not levels. Ok nevermind. ♥♥♥♥ this game.

I can't tell which Tier ( Soul Memory range) is the best and most active in DLC areas.
Hopeful someone else can answer.
But one thing I know: buy the Agape Ring from Straid and wear it to have full control about your Soul Memory. Basically you won't gain any souls so long as you wear it.

Yeah, I got that, thanks a lot. I'm currently level 112, but I guess that doesn't matter at all? Even a level 40 can be paired up with a level 200 if they are on the same soul memory? That doesn't sound too good.

Your level does only matter for PvP matchmaking in Brotherhood of Blood arena.
Otherwise the Soul Memory is the only thing what counts. If you are playing for first time and die a lot, lose your souls over and over again, or want upgrade several weapons, or maybe want buy all spells and tons of consumables , then you'll end on a much higher SM.

I'm still on very low SM ( 42k), because I like to play some random coop before I progress further. But I think you're not the only one who wants coop in DLC on high SM, sometimes when I read the forum I saw quite high SM player asking for help. Maybe try your luck at Fume Knight and Ivory King.

That's helpful info to have, thanks.

Somewhere I have heared that after a certain level of SM all players are placed in one pool. Maybe that is my best bet for an active dlc area. I guess then I should get as high as possible in level so I won't feel a lot weaker than the others I encounter in coop/invasions.

Huh, Dark Souls 2 is kind of a weird game in almost every way.

All right thanks a lot, that's great advice. Luckily I'm only at 1.3 million SM right now.

What kind of dumb crap did you do?

Mostly challenges that involved being highly prepared like ng+7 runs either naked or with minimalistic gear (not counting the no-damage+ ones, those usually were ran on a sl155 character with a rather specialized build) or accomplish a rather specific task, like beating the ivory king with no helper knights at ng+7, might sound simple but trust me, it's actually quite the sweat maker.

That's more playthroughs than what I have across all Fromsoft games. Lol. You must really like something in Dark Souls 2. I haven't done more than a NG+ in their games.

30k-100k for Lost Bastille, Forest of Fallen Giants, Heide Tower,
100-500k for middle game areas, people could took different routes. Hard to predict.
500-1m Tseldora, Gutter, Iron Keep.
1m+ for Drangleic castle, about 1.5m+ most late game areas, 3-5m or less for final fight
From 700k to 5m all DLC content.
Most popular areas for coop are either fast boss run or painful area for newbies, like Iron Keep or Tseldora for example (i remember i got decent amount of summoning here year ago ob 699k SM).
Use Soul Memory Calculator to figure out how matchmaking works:
https://jakebarn.es/ds2sm

If you wanna invasions and proper build with variety weapons - make a character between 1.5m to 3m SM.
If you need somewhat low SM and at least something interesting for build - between 210k and 350k.
Bracket between 500k-800k also good, but you need constantly switch areas to be summoned.

Overall Soul Memory isnt the huge problem, its players and how level design was build in ds2. Most of them dont wanna use humanity, saving before boss or invader or hp threshold, so they wouldnt see your sign. And locations allows too much freedom, so even removing Soul Memory system entirely wouldnt help, since on average people on first playthrough ended like from lvl 100 to lvl 250.

DS2 is better with dedicated coop partner for full playthough. While DS3 has linear progression and most end game characters only has lvls between 80 and 130. (best game for random coop in my opinion)

Also every year each souls game has an event, when players return to the game to do full playthrough and random coop/invasions for 2 weeks. Check the calendar:
