Phantom guarding Undead Purgatory
I keep dying to him and I don't really know how to beat him. That sword's range is ridiculous and he seems to recover too quickly. This is making me want to quit the game. I'm playing with an upgraded scimitar and notched whip. This feels like a very unfair fight. I can also access Earthen Peak from Harvest Valley. Should I go there instead?

So you're a dex build?

Then just cheese him with a bow, it takes long but it's completely, absolutely safe (provided you don't fall off the gaps in the bridge).

Or lure him and then run past him into the fog gate.

Either way it's a dead end after the boss, the only purpose of that place is to meet a NPC so that you can join a covenant. Earthen peak is the actual path to progress in the game.

Huh. I looked at the wiki and saw that you were supposed to go through Purgatory first.

yea you should, you not only can join a covenant there, but you also get a red soapstone, like the white soapstone, it lasts forever, but instead of being summoned for coop, you are summoned to fight!
id definitly do undead puragtory.

if youre having trouble, try summoning a friend for coop, or as some might say "git gud"
the boss fight its self is pretty easy, one of the easiest in the game IMO, so dont worry about double chugging estus and usingg lifegems to beat him.

The boss is easy after you know how it's done. For a new player I wouldn't paint it so easy.

It's just a dead end after the boss fight if you're not interested in pvp. I don't know if this goes against your playstyle but maybe consider looking up some videos on fighting him. In my experience he was pretty easy with backstabs.

That phantom can be interesting to fight, but yeah it has some weird reactions and is surprisingly fast. Backstabs are great for damage, but anytime you get close for a backstab it pretty much rolls away.

If you don't have someone helping you, then your best bet will be figuring out how to parry that phantoms attacks or just ditching it and running around when you want to go through there. It really is a difficult to fight phantom.
