Worth it to keep Dragonrider soul for weapon?
Just killed my first boss in DS2, and saw that this soul can give me a pretty good looking Halberd. I prefer Halberds specifically in DS1, and I still wanna use one in DS2, so is using his soul for the Dragonrider's Halberd? Or will I find a halberd later, and should consume his soul now?

I'm biased as I like to collect, so I'll always say save it and turn it into something.

The dragonrider soul can be turned into 4 different things. halberd, Twinblade, Bow, and Greatshield. I am particularily fond of the bow myself.

The halberd is decent imo. It does both physical damage and magic damage. However, I'm no Halberd expert, so I can't say with absolute certainty if it's the best for you or not. I do know that there are 15 halberd classed weapons, so you do have options/variety in that regard.

edit: (well, 14 really. One of them essentially changes into a new weapon once it gets broken, and as it's new form is functional (and for many, prefered), I counted it as it's own thing)

Well I did recently pick up an "Old Knights Halberd". It has C scaling in strength, and A scaling in Dex, and I've been putting points into both of them. The Dragonrider's Halberd does have higher base damage, but it has lesser scaling initially with B in strength, and C in Dex. So I'm not entirely sure what would be better; Higher base damage with slightly less scaling... Or less base damage and higher scaling?

Generally speaking, especially later in the game/at higher levels, scaling is more important than base damage (unless the base damage is extremely higher, but it rarely is).

There are other factors than pure damage though. Weapons of the same type (Halberd type, for example) can still have different movesets, swing speeds, and stamina consumption.

Well maybe you can somewhat guide me here, but in Dark Souls 1, my favorite weapon by far was the Gargoyle's Halberd. I got it up to +15 in upgrades, and it shredded everything, even in NG+. It had great move sets in every aspect. Is there a Halberd that's similar here in DS2? The 'Old Knight's Halberd' I picked up just a little bit ago has some similar moves in its Light and Heavy attack, but its jump-forward attack does a stab/thrusting motion instead of the side swipe like the Gargoyle's Halberd had in DS1.

For example, with my main character, Old Knights has less overall AR than my Dragonrider's Halberd, but that is because the Dreagonriders does split damage (physical and magic), while Old Knight is only physical. Making the Dragonriders good if the enemy is weak to magic, but againt you average enemy, Old Knight's will often do slightly more damage (due to only dealing with 1 enemy defence stat). Old Knights is slightly slower, especially on the second swing in a chain, though it does a wide arc. The Dragonrider's Halberd is faster, especially on the second swing in a chain, and is a forwards thrust instead of a wide swing. Stamina consumption is slightly less on the Old Knights though.

Never was a fan of elemental weapons in DS1. If I needed damage like that, I'd just use a resin. My ideal Halberd is fast, has move sets with range, and does only physical damage, but if I have to, I can compromise on one.

just wait for the mastodon halberd i think its called collosal halberd make this +10 and 1090 dmg out of 2 hits

heh, yeah. like I said, there are 14 / 15 different Halberd style weapons in this game, and I'm no expert on them (I usually go for thematic weapons based on a characetr concept I want to create/re-create, but at the moment my main is more of a sword guy, straight, curved, and great)

edit: OH, the one big fault in the Old Knight's Halberd is it has crap durabilty. It breaks VERY fast. Sure, repairs are done automatically at a bonfire when you rest provided you rest before it breaks, but if it does, it costs souls to repair at a blacksmith, and if will often get to that point long before getting to the next bonfire.

I'll take a quick look at my halberds to see which one has pure physical and good scaling and such...

Interesting. Well I guess the only thing I want really is fast, and range.

Syans halberd 2 handed move set is unparryable and kind of unique with a move-set of both a spear and a halberd plus 2 handed strong attack does not spin to win which makes hard for enemies to predict.

Mastodon Halberd only has Str scaling, but it's scaling is VERY good, does the most damage by far. It also does more poise damage than the others. Speed and stamina consumption is... meh.

Blue Knight's Halberd is faster, and does more damage than a normal halberd, but is more middle of the road imo.

Wrathful Axe is comparable as well (boss weapon).

Helix Halberd is fasterst of them all and uses significantly less stamina to use, and has more thrusts in it's moveset than the others, but its scaling is not so great (lowest total AR out of all the pure physical halberds)

For you it'll prbably be between Matodon and Wrathful Axe. Mastodon has a straight thrust on it's second R1, while Wrathful is the wide swing on it's second R1, though Mastodon also has a slight edge in pure AR rating.

You know what, they all have their interesting quirks! lol. (the collector in my is taking over).... collect them all and try them out! lol :D

I'll give them both a try, and see which I like. Thanks!

Oh, should I mention the wrathful axe has a faith requirement of 28.
