Also put on the dispelling ring +1 that you get earlier in brume tower.
I suppose you can tank some of his attacks with a greatshield but learning the attack delay and rolling is always the best way.
I've done this boss with heavy/slow weps as well as light/fast weps and find that the fight is much easier with a rapier than an ultra.
And when he buffs himslf with the aura dont forget to pop lifegems to compensate for the hp drain when in close quarters
I recommend taking the path through the jail cells as you don't have to fight very many enemies and it's a lot faster. You have 8 seconds from when you first pull the leaver to when you must pass the gate at the end of the hallway, don't worry about attacking the undead knights in the hallway because they will just slow you down. You have to run through another pathway as well with the same idea don't worry about the Knights and just get through. After those two hallways you will end up in the last room, near the fog.
Now for the fight itself I recommend having a lot of health, taking up to 3 hits without dying is ideal, though two is still great. You always want to dodge to the left (your left), and Dodge when the attack is actually in motion not with the windup. Don't get greedy with your hits either, that will get you killed quickly. With my run I used the Champions Lance, the Tower Great shield, with a light set of armor that has strong magic resist. I dodge to the left, attacked him ONCE, and dodged away giving me enough time to reposition myself for the next attack. If you get hit dodge one of his combos and if he does is AoE attack that's when you should heal. This is my method, yours might be a bit different, but If I can help anymore then just add me and I'll help as much as I can. (Sadly my Internet is bad so I can't join your game to help :/).
Good luck and happy hunting!
Well, there's your problem. Drop the greatshield and start rolling.
No seriously, there is now way you can sustain the fight while blocking his hits. Especially once he's buffed himself.
