mage lion set mandatory?

If I want to go full sorcery, is the mage lion set mandatory? Or can I go fashion souls?

You know what's really mainstream? The damn Hexer's Hood.
Although, no one's using that with fashion in mind, i guess.

In my Magic only Run without any Melee Weapons i only used the Wisdom Staff and the Castring+1 and Hexer Hood the Rest was Fashion and it was a fun and easy Run-
Only the 3 DLCs are a pure Nightmare for Magic only, so i buyed a Rapier...

It's not mandatory, but it gives a nice boost. Since it doesn't have any headpiece, you can pair it with a Black Witch XY, the Hexer's or Black Hood or other headgear that provides free stat-points/other effects. The Hollow Mage Hood or Warlock Mask (was that its name?) for example give free Int, the Crowns are pretty good, too.

If you don't care for the best efficiency, go fashion souls. But e.g. the Lion Mage Cuffs fit into most armor-combination without looking bad, so you can get that nice little boost and a very low weight armor piece with decent elemental defenses.

Like Katty already said, Clear Bluestone Ring +2 is all you need for PvE since it boosts casting speed by 55% (it's so good that once you equip it, you will never unequip it). I highly recommend going the fashion souls route to make your run fun. If you like maxing certain attributes, then consider all the options TrueArchery suggested. Clear Bluestone Ring +2 + Black Hood + Lion Mage Robe + Lion Mage Cuffs + Lion Mage Skirt + Lizard Staff is the best combination as far as casting speed is concerned.
