Broken chests don't respawn unitl ng+.
You didn't lose much though, as that particular chest contained Divine Blessing.
Even if you're doing it to mimic-check though, I would still avoid hitting them. You can tell a chest is a mimic in two ways:
1. Mimics have a breathing animation, where their lid moves up and down very slowly. You can catch a glimpse of their gums and teeth under there if your eyes are sharp.
2. Mimics have metal clasps on them; chests do not. Metal mimics have two bright white clasps, while wooden mimics have a dull gray lock in the middle.
Oh, but it does. Chests break in a way all other non-immediately breakable objects break. It usually takes 3 swings to break them, but heavy attakcks of heavier weapons can do it in two. Greatshiled slams will break everything in one.
Since we're on the topic, there are other ways to check the chest for mimicry.
Poisoning the chest with Poison Mist or Toxic Mist will reveal a healthbar if it is indeed a mimic, and usually slowly kill them, without them even waking up.
Wearing any piece of the Butterfly set will trigger a poisoning animation near a mimic, but not near a regular chest.
Lastly, throwing a Lloyd's Talisman into the chest will pacify the mimic, allowing you to retrieve the item without waking it up or killing it.
Wooden Chests do respawn, if you use a Bonfire Ascetic. Wether or not they have been looted properly or broken doesn't matter. Metal Chests, however, only re-spawn until NG+ (but they're also unbreakable).
Funny, you guys would mention mimics, because that specific one at Black Gulch has a lock, despite being a regular old chest.
My go-to-way to check for Mimic-chests, was to parry in front of them, so that the parry-frames hit the chest. You hear a slash-sound, if it's a Mimic and a wooden/metal thunk, if it's a regular chest.
Also a good mehtod. I'm pretty sure parries still count as hits though, which means after doing enough parries a regular wooden chest will break.
Edit: Perhaps, at some point in the past, you have broken a chest, haven't picked up the Rubbish initially, respawned the chest and picked it up afterwards and haven't noticed the actual item still inside the respawned chest.
Also, parries won't break chests.
3 parries with Cleric's Parma do break the chest.
Broken a wooden chest with parries, took resulting Rubbish, reset the location with an Ascetic.
The chest did respawn, intact, closed, and with an item inside.
Perhaps chests don't respawn if you don't pick up Rubbish? No desire to test that now. I don't like breaking chests or using Ascetics generally.
And thanks to all that provided info about chests, ascetics and mimics!
wooden chest usualy contains materials and consumables. so its not that bad if you destroy it
