Farming Soul Drops (especially early game)?
So I want to try staying at low tier Soul Memory using Agape Ring, but it would be nice if I can quickly boost up to higher lvls later on with soul drops.

I suppose I could just play through the game normally, and I'd probably end up with a whole bunch of 'soul of ___' type consumables by the time I need it?

But I was considering, maybe I could gather up some item discovery stuff, maybe watchdragon parma from the heide dragon and & prisoner's tatters to go along with my explorer's hat, then go farm the dogs just outside McDuff's workshop at the bastille for a bunch of 800 soul drops? Possibly go a bit further and pick up the jester mask & gold serpent ring from Iron Keep first?

Are there any other locations that are as efficient for farming soul drops like this early on?
Also getting lots of souls from boss souls isn't an option for awhile, I'm saving those for collecting boss weapons and such.

I wouldnt do that. Keep your hard souls in your inventory, thats a few hundred k, and when you come into situation that u wanna raise your SM, get to the Memory of Jeigh, and kill the Giant Lord a few times burning that free bonfire ascetic u find in the memory

This is the exact opposite of early game though...

I have no problem clearing the Iron Keep and if you're able to clear the Iron Keep from start to finish you could easily get over 60,000 souls every run. But if you have the skill for it I suppose you could do the Giant Lord soul farm method. That's a little too stressful for me. I don't like the idea of getting one-shot if I get sneezed on.

This sounds like it will be a lot slower than actually just defeating enemies or bosses when you want to level up.

Why don't you leave certain bosses alive that you can "pop" when you are ready to level up? Not all bosses are mandatory for progression; there are a heck of a lot you can just skip so you can use them to level up later.

Are you doing this as a challenge for for multiplayer purposes?

Can confirm that wiping out Iron Keep gives you a lot of souls. You kind of have to if you want to fight Smelter.

There isn't any sufficient spot for early-game soul farming, let alone soul-items. At least not compared, to just progressing through the game, until you reach a better farming spot.

Well, there's one, but It's not an infinite farming spot, since it requires the use of Bonfire Ascetics. You could kill The Rotten a bunch of times, which is what any%-speedrunners do.
You can pick a Bonfire Ascetic as a starting gift, pick up the one at Lost Bastille and since it's right behind The Rotten's arena, you make a detour to the Sunken King DLC, to pick up some more (there are 7 Ascetics total there). That would leave you with 9 Ascetics and all the soul items gained from that should add up to around 800k. At bonfire intensity 2 or higher, The Rotten will drop the "Old Dead One's Soul" (worth 60k) on top of his normal one (worth 25k).
Note that it's the 2nd Black Gulch-bonfire behind the petrified Hollow is the one, where you have to burn the Ascetics.

But if you intend to progress through the game normally anyways, then that's also kind of pointless too. It's useful to skip straight to Shrine of Winter, though, since it will also open, if you've collected 1 million souls on your current playthrough (+1M for each game-cycle).

The absolute earliest spot you can farm soul items in is by killing the hippo next to the first bonfire in Forest of Fallen Giants. This hippo, and only this hippo, can drop Souls of a Proud Knight, which are worth $2,000 each.

Here also additional farm - enter the covenant of champions, learn Soul Appease, go to Lost Bastille to bonfire with blacksmith, cast a spell and sit, and repeat a few times.
Dogs can drop some small souls (400, 800 each) and humanity.

Honestly I was just curious if it's a viable option to just do a quick lvl up via soul drops if/when someone wants to leave a particular Soul Memory tier bracket
