Grand Lance or Large Club?
I have the Large Club at +3, while my lance is at +2. I'm mostly STR with enough dex to use the lance, and I'm not sure which to go with.
Which do you think is the superior weapon? (For PvP and PvE?)

Great club is better for pve
Lances are good in pvp if they are paired with a fast weapon in your other hand

Grand lance is mostly for quality builds.

Large club is good for pancaking in PvE...

The Grand Lance is rather a Strength weapon, too, the Str-scaling is twice as good as the Dex one.

Both are bad in PvP if you're a beginner. In general, Lances are better because good spacing and running attacks are aids to face, but you've to be a pro to do that reliably and on purpose.

I'd say the Large Club is overall a bit better than the Grand Lance for PvE, even though both are very viable. Reason being a) Strike-damage helps nonticably against some of the more pesky enemies and b) the 2hR2 is a pancake which slams about everything that isn't ten times as big as you into the ground, it's great cheese for some of the tougher enemies and NPC-invaders. It'll burn through the durability though... and c) it's got some horizontal swings.
However, the GL has more damage potential because of its high counter stat, pair it with the Leo Ring and you got an even better damage output. You can also use it for poking behind a shield.

The Grand Lance also has a really high critical modifier (which is different from the counter modifier), and coupled with its high base power it makes backstabs on anything humanoid be a more or less guaranteed instakill... as Maldron the assassin so kindly demonstrates in Eleum Loyce :P

If you're planning on going pure strength, you actually might get more bang for your buck out of the Chariot Lance, which you can get from Straid for the Executioner's Chariot boss soul. GL is best for a quality build, though. Large Club is a PVE monster, thanks to all that strike damage and S scaling once upgraded. Not too sure about PVP, though. Not really my thing.

Nah their AR is essentially the same @40/18 and actually the same at 99/99. CL got bleed but that's useless in PvE - and it's heavier and arguably harder to upgrade and (objectively) starts weaker since it's a PDB-weapon, you cannot infuse or buff it either.
The GL has more efficient AR gains, too, if you go 40/40 you reach higher AR with the GL than with the CL @62/18, it isn't much anyway but it still stays the better weapon.

What do people mean by "quality build"?

Str and Dex build.

The term comes from Demon's Souls. An upgrade path which increased Str and Dex scaling was called like that.

It's kind of bad in this game because there's only VERY few weapon which actually work well with it, like the Sun Sword, Curved Dragon Greatsword or Bone Fist.
Forgot to say, its main appeal is to be able to use just about every (physical damage) weapon in the game. It actually only really started to be "good" as in "optimized damage output for the points invested" in DaS3 with the Refined-infusion.

Might also be worth pointing out that getting 20 STR, 20 DEX lets you use more or less anything in DS2, there's not a lot of DEX weapons compared to the abundancy of STR weapons and twohanding a weapon doubles your strength. If you're not into katanas, you should be able to use more or less anything you'd like after getting those stats, and you can get them pretty early too.

Oh, so I've always been using quality builds in this game without even knowing xD
Except on my mage.

It might not be "good" in terms of scaling because it never improves even at +10 but the Grand Lance is a quality weapon because it has c scaling in strength and dex. It does plenty of damage imo and it's fun knocking down enemies in PVE with the running r1 and the r2 attacks.

But scaling letters are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ in this game and it's essentially more like B/D. You should treat it like a Str-weapon if you build around it.

Why are you quoting that comment though? It's referring to quality builds in general, not to the GL.

Because OP initially was asking about the grand lance?
