As a heads up if you're planning to play any other soulsbornes in the future: Dark Souls is the only game, where you would level-up at bonfires, instead of having a "Maiden in the HUB" for the job.
And hey, it can have it's perks. After leveling up, you can use the remainder of your souls on Melentia to stock up on Lifegems.
That's fair if others like it! I didn't mind it in Demon's Souls - it's fitting there. After just coming from DS1 though, it just seems like an objectively worse system - mostly because of the loading-times. Guess it's something I'll just have to bear through.
Eh, I might be lazy. But it's also tedious. There's no point in sitting thru 2 loading screens. How is that an improvement over DS1? Does the level up lady become more interesting? Cause I can't even remember her name right now!
Anyway, I was just wondering if Dark Souls modding was as thorough as Elder Scrolls modding. Oh well! Thanks y'all!
The "level-up lady" is relevant to the lore of the game. She can also increase the number of Estus Flasks and will point out, when you've found any new shards to do so. Estus potency, however, is increased at the Majula bonfire, by burning Sublime Bone Dust there.
Elder Scrolls modding is on a whole 'nother level. They're a mess w/o mods. Dark Souls modding on PC is mostly known for fixing the horrible PC port of the original PtdE version of Dark Souls, randomizer mods and total conversion mods, like Cinders Mod for Dark Souls III.
DS2, 3 and the remaster also have a softban system, which isn't 100% understood and doesn't really punish cheaters (who will just change Steam accounts). Speaking of which, back-up your saves every now and again, if you play online - cheaters can mess up your savefile. It's not very common, but better safe than sorry.
Many mods, which change any of the game's paramaters and don't just replace textures may cause softbans. This might be why we don't see as many QoL mods. Demand is low and risk is high.
Thanks for all the info! I might have to do some research on cheating cause this game is too punishing. Spending the majority of my early game almost always nerfed with less than 50% health is not going to be fun. I messed up - I really wish I got DS3 instead of DS2.
Vigor doesn't softcap until 50 and you always get a little HP everytime you level up at all.
You also have access to infinite Lifegems sold by Melentia. And the Ring of Binding can cap max HP reduction to 75%. Human Effigies are also farmable. Enemies de-spawn after killing them enough times. Temporarily join the Company of Champions covenant for infinite respawns, when farming items.
Oh and another thing every new player must know: Adaptility. i-frames on your dodgeroll are NOT related to equipload in DS2 (you still "fatroll" beyond 70% and as you lower the equipload, you'll get more stamina-regen).
Instead, i-frames are tied to Agility. You can primarily increase it by leveling up Adaptility (ATTN also gives a little).
You should get to 92 Agility asap, to reduce the amount of "'C'mon, how did that hit me?!"-moments by a lot (nothing helps against grab-hitboxes, though - in any FromSoft game). You get another i-frame at 96 Agility. 99 Agility is the fastroll-equivalent (13 i-frames) of other soulsgames, but it doesn't cost much extra Adaptility to go to to 105 (14 i-frames).
Oh, good point! I hadn't thought about it like that! It might be my current character is a lost cause then. I'll push a little further though and find that Ring of Binding. It sounds like it will really help! Thanks for the other tips, too. I'm already upping my AGI to a decent number!
Ring of Binding is very close to the beginning of the game. From Majula's bonfire, look towards the small houses, and you'll see a stone archway leading to a stone room. Follow the path to Heide's Tower of Flame. In that area, continue the only way forward until you reach a large, round room with some huge knights in it. From that room, take the path to the right and you'll see some stairs spiraling down slightly towards a fog gate. Near the stairs is a knight sleeping in front of a chest. Beat him to access the chest and get the ring.
Good luck, skeleton.
