You can also burn effigy on bonfire and play online, chances are minimal to get invaded, but you won't see the signs to make the game cooperative.

i mean if i could id have all the benefits of being able to see messages etc without being invaded id opt for that, i do also intend to solo the game so not having coop isnt a problem for me, but it seems effigies are pretty rare or at least a finite resource?

Effigies become very common as drops a bit later in the game--from the dog mobs (whatever they're called) and other enemies. Also, I was gifted 99 effigies from a NG+++ player once, so couldn't hurt to ask around either, see if someone would be willing to drop you some effigies to help with a solo run.

Sadly, they didn't add a 'go offline' option to the menu until DS3. The previous two, you had to open the game without an active internet connection to go offline. You could re-connect afterward, but when the game opens, you had to be offline. It's... dumb, but at least they fixed it.

make an outbound rule to block
drive:\your\steam\directory\steamapps\common\Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin\Game\DarkSoulsII.exe
in windows firewall

you can toggle it on and off by right clicking the rule.
if you want to go back online without closing the game, you can disable the outbound rule, and quit to the main menu while you're ingame in order to log in to the online service again.

you have 2 choices, you can set steam to offline, or disconnect your pc from the internet while ingame (not at main menu) then reconnect your pc to the internet afterward so you can still use steam online but be offline ingame.

There is a mod for forced offline play on Nexus. But as with any mod, I can't guarantee it won't get you banned for some stupid reason. If you don't care for online play at all, this is the most convenient solution.
