Any reason not to pick explorer class all the time?

Well, what ARE the reasons to pick him then? I took a look at him and didn't found anything in him that would interest me. His fashion is meh, his stats were not meeting my needs and the only thing i remember that makes him special is crap ton of items in his inventory for early game. Which you can buy in tons later in the game.

Hell, the many items might not even be an advantage for many people. Seeing how this game lacks the "hold SWITCH ITEMS to switck to slot 1 (usually estus) managing your item menu when its too complicated becomes a nightmare for people with bad micro-managment.

Plenty, it's an unoptimized class for most builds, the starting gear is fairly bad. The items are pretty good however as you can for example smash the armor merchant with the magic pots and get his set for a significant soul gaining boost and such.
Also high Adp. It surely is a quite cconvenient start, assuming you pick up another weapon soon (even is the dagger isn't terrible).
The Explorer stars with a dagger, which you can pick up in Things Betwixt anyway. Their gear is available from Melentia for a handful of souls. Their stats aren't good for anything specific but are a decent mix.

I just started a game today as a Deprived, with the intention of builing into a Hexer. The main draw being you can build them into anything you want and respec into anything else. Other classes can't be respecced as efficiently, you'll always have those starting stats which you might not want.

The early game is easy and your starting class only affects the first couple of hours. Being able to respec from melee to magic is a far more useful feature of the Deprived, than starting gear is for the Explorer. Or any class for that matter.

Because in DS2 the starting stats are so low compared to the others, the DS2 Deprived is the best. There's no respeccing in DS1 and in DS3 some classes have lower stats which can help optimise builds.

As a guy who created topic mentioned - i guess yes, it's the best and safest way to start with.
It can be anything - from mage to pure warrior without any losses. Add a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of items you are starting with and it's by far the best choice.

As others said, class doesn't really matter much past the first 1-2 hours, given that it merely determines your starting stats and equipment. Unless you're going for a hardcore min-max build, just pick whatever you like.

Now try working on your character's face only to realize that it looks different/ugly in-game because you made a mistake or because the lighting is different. Now that's annoying.

Explorer is easily the best class for speed runs, because he starts with the magic urns which turn the armor smith into dust for his armor set. I don't know why everyone drones on about the same thing, but starting class matters, especially in Dark Souls 2. It influences the first couple hours of a normal, non-speedrun playthrough.

Example: If I start as the warrior, I can literally go straight to the greatsword in No Man's Wharf, acquire it and two-hand it without even leveling up. That's the only class where it's possible to do such a thing. Explorer is the ONLY choice for good speedruns, so that matters. Magic is so hidden away in this game that sometimes the only choice is to pick the sorcerer class to give yourself a good headstart on spell acquisition.

Sure, when you're 999 hours into the game and you're SL400 you don't notice your starting class, but in the first quarter of the game, it certainly matters!
