To get alternate ending you need to fight Aldia which means:
> Burn all 4 primal bonfires
> Meet him at Undead Crypt
> Meet him at Dragon Shrine
> Kill Vendrick before Nashandra
Once you beat Aldia just head for the gateway and leave, no DLC is required.

While you don't need the 4 crowns (vendricks + 3 dlc crowns) you might want to get them, since the dark ending makes even less sense than the usual dark souls story snippits if you don't.
The crown prevents hollowing which becomes relevant for the post game future of your character during the dark ending. (you do not play it, you do not really see it... but the crowns effect just brings some sense into doing it that way..)
