Is it still possible to get ring of binding early in the game?

I played the original version of ds2 and what I used to do is run across the level in Heide's tower onto the blue cathedral and get ring of binding early in the game. But in scolar there are Heide knights and a frigging dragon (imagine my surprise when I run into it the first time) and I can't find the lever to lower the gate. So is it impossible to get ring of binding without killing all the enemies now?

Nope. Levers come out of the ground only after killing enemies guarding them. ''Dragon''/wyvern is very weak and you have a npc summon near stairs to it, so it's an easy kill. You will have to clean area completely on a way to it if you are unsure about being able to kill it without a need to heal.

You don't need to kill the dragon to get the Ring of Binding.

In fact, if you kill the dragon, you're going in the wrong direction to get it.

You want to head down... towards the Dragonrider.

They changed the location of the ring?

It's on the dragonrider side now.

Specifically in the chest across the narrow bridge opposite of the Dragonrider's fog gate, but there's a Heide Knight blocking it.
