It could have been a lot better. The whole level is flat (except for the two towers. One in the beginning and one at the very end). Imagine if it had multiple layers, was bigger overall, and had a lot more unique enemies. I always thought there should have been a random chance to encounter a Moonlight Butterfly in Shrine of Amana since the area has a magic/sorcery theme going on. That would make exploring that area memorable (in a good way). Also if it had a bunch of greenery. Kind of like darkroot forest from dark souls 1 but still keeping in theme with those bright blue flowers in already in Shrine of Amana. Also those flowers should have those small blue burrs (which increase magic resistance) attached them so you can loot them. I've been playing a lot of Skyrim lately and you can loot so many useful herbs and flowers off of plants there. Dark Souls games as a whole should have had a lot more plant life and wildlife as well as letting you interact with them/have random encounters with them.
Edit: I forgot that in dark souls 1 they had Vagrants. It was pretty exciting whenever I encountered one in the game. It's sad that they didn't bring that to dark souls 2 and dark souls 3 somehow.
i liked it because when i first travelled there from the level before it, i heard the singing and was so haunting. and the siniging makes the fireflies glow and calms those water lizrdmen which i thought was a really cool idea.
then the level flattens out and has all these hidden underwater dropoffs that you cannot see unless u have a torch lit. great idea for secret traps. and then the magic throwers + mace wielders are like the WORST, and it is all so so hard until when u finally beat it - it's like a miracle!
a great level. and the frog boss isn't that hard either. which is always good. (i loathe the Fume knight)
i never played dark souls 1, sotfs is my first dark souls.
Yeah it's definitely still a great level. I wish I had a recording of my entire first playthrough. I wish I was impressed with shrine of amana on playthroughs now but it's so easy now for me (I go there usually with a fully upgraded bow and a high magic resist shield). If the lizardmen had better AI I would feel they were actually a challenge but it's super easy to cheese them. That being said for a first timer they can really catch you off guard. They actually do a decent amount of damage and they actually can make you bleed really quickly. They almost have dark souls 1 level bleed (minor spoilers, bleed is op in dark souls 1). I think people should play the souls game in order but I'm okay with people playing dark souls 2 first because it's the only stable dark souls game for pc. Also people who play dark souls 1 first and are not open to a new type of play style (which dark souls 2) tend to just b*tch and moan about how different dark souls 2 is.
Though I've taken another route lately...LOOKING GLASS SHIELD!
While not very fast or anything spell parrying feel so good when it hits them. Makes all the lost life worth it.
