Really, 150 is pretty high for most builds already.
Or it was divine punishment for using katanas.
In about three to four hundred matches, I don't think I've been matched with more than a dozen overlevelled characters.
Yeah, a lot of people take the pvp in this game way to seriously.
The main thing holding it back from being taken seriously in the fighting game genre is the horrendous netcode. Its fine for normal play, but not adequate in the slightest for any type of competitive play.
Another reason to ignore this meta is because it constrains the player--especially in Dark Souls 2. Dark Souls 2 has wonderful variety, most notably the sorcery/miracles/hexes available to choose from. But to make use of them players must invest many points in attunement, faith, intelligence and so on.
Also, the game is hard. The new game plus cycles are noticeably different with new enemy placements and red phantoms (which I love, personally). Unless players want to get pummeled in the higher game cycles it is necessary to level up to cope with the more powerful enemies.
Finally, these so-called havelmonsters, as much as we find them to be agitating--they are few in numbers.
Good luck out there and just remember to enjoy the game. Dark Souls II is so diverse and fun. Make whatever you want! :)
