Are whips useful in PvP?
They don't seem particularly effective against enemies/bosses in PvE.

Is it mostly a PvP weapon?

Old whip and spotted whip are if you make your build for them.

I've seen them used as a finsher. They are slightly more difficult to dodge and have great range

They're a counter to parrykings. Overall they're okay for both, but other whips than the Old Whip or Spotted Whip aren't really worth to be used. Maybe the Notched Whip for a bleed-build. Maybe. But it's worse than the 2 others.

Having a whip in a off-hand is one way to punish parry spammers. It also has great range and wide swipes, making it pretty difficult to dodge. You're left open after a swing, though.

As mentioned, Old Whip and Spotted Whip are the best ones around. You'll need a Bracing Knuckle Ring to use the Old Whip, as it has extremely low durability.

I used a Old Whip on a build back in vanilla Ds2 for punishing parry kings, twinblade spammers, and people who ran away in invations. The running attack is very good (the one when you whip in an arc, don't remember if 2H or 1H)

@TrueArchery: Well I take it as you ignored Bloodied Whip, actually it's the second best whip beside Old Whip, having longest reach and highest durability.

ha funny topic. i just came to ♥♥♥♥♥ about how stupidly OP dual wielding poison whips is.
so cheese.
why even play the game at that point... just hit rb once and run away... retarded.

Offhand old whip with any straight or curved sword is good. Easy animation cancels, fine damage, 2hr1 into 1hl1/1hl2 stanceswap comes really fast, has huge length and surprises even experienced players (have never seen anyone using it tbh except from me)

Common fruit, poison moss, poisonbit ring+1, learn how to roll. Whips powerstance not even close to top
