Just to mention, I play it with my integrated graphics on 30 fps...
lol... after like 2 hours i spent defeating the tutorial boss asylum demon in DS, i didnt went all the way up to the cliff where the bird grabs you and thought its a dead end and spent an extra hour just wondering around trying to find the way... good ol days...
Also, once you have the Soapstones (you should hopefully have one by now if you found Trusty Pate, and there's one on the topmost floor of the Cardinal Tower - note that the locked door can be broken if you attack it a bit), try plopping down signs occasionally to help other players out - you get souls for all enemies that die in their world, and you don't drop them if you die, so it's a completely safe way to farm for levelling up and explore an area.
Gonna quote myself on this:
Basically, in co-op other players become friendly spirits in your world with special benefits but also some drawbacks (they can't pick up item orbs, unlock doors with their own keys, interact with some switches and other things), in order to become a spirit you need a certain item (White Soapstone) to put down summon signs. Both stones are found in Forest of Fallen Giants, the small one has a short time limit but players can summon you even if there's no boss in that area in their world; the big one has a practically infinite time limit but can only be used when the host player has bosses left in that area. When there's spirits in your world, you can't leave the area they appeared in or use bonfires.
That being said, once you play and get used to the game and you level up as a player (not just your character, this game will literally force you to "level up" as a gamer) the game will progress quicker. Having limited tools AND knowledge/ability is going to be slow in these games, but it'll pick up.
Now I could do the gargolye thingy or the shulva and both hard as hell.
i was so frustrated because i knew there was a great game here somewhere, and i was stuck in forest of fallen giants ggrinding for days it felt like.
i probably cant find the thread i made jsut like this one, it was a long time ago. but it got some helpful links.

if youre not the video watching type: consume an effigy and look for signs on the ground. you can see them as early as the bridge into forest, but generally you will see them all around cardinal hall bonfire and below.
That's the price that you pay to improve so you are on the right track. With Dark Souls 1 I didn't make it out of undead burg for a month so don't feel bad. Eventually it will get faster and faster. Just think of it this way. You are competing with players that started with Demon Souls so they already know the deal. The formula hasn't changed much. If you need info don't be ashamed to visit the Dark Souls wikis.
