A lot of messages in Dark Souls are usually lies to mislead the player. In this case you got tricked. No ring is required for anything after Ivory King.

Probably a reference to Lord of the Rings series.

Edge of that boss arena looks a lot like inside that volcano mountain in Mordor, where the one ring is destroyed.

It's a straight-up LoTR reference, because it looks kinda like the inside of Mt. Doom there.
