Buffing weaponsin in DSII
Before trying to do another playthrough I need some clarification on this mechanic. How does buffing weapons with spells and consumables works in this game? Most people say that it adds X elemental damage (fire, fo example) and then the resulted elemental damage is multiplied by a certain number. But some other sources instead say that the damage added is based on the weapon total damage even if it is made of different elements. (So I can buff the fire longsword with great magic weapon and I still get a lot of damage).

So guys, which one i correct and which one is wrong?

UPD: If possible, can you guys provide some real proofs for formulas? With calculations, tests and things like those. Don't refer to wikis.

I know that weapon buffs increase a certain elemental dmg for X + 0.3 * total dmg in the certain element. So if you have a dark infused weapon and you canst dark weapon on it, you will get a better bonus for the + 0.3 * total dark dmg.

I personally want to believe that it works this way because the other way just doesn't make much sense. It doesn't seem right when you don't invest in FTH, then take a Big F*****ng Hammer +10, buff it with a gold pine resin and gain tons of lightning damage.

same as gico said. Weapon buffs adds a raw damage buff (usually around 50) + a percentage damage buff ( this one can is somewhere between 1.25 to 1.35 depending on the type of buff). so now lets asume you buff ur weapon with dark weapon. In this case you will get a +50 dark damage and a +1.3 multiplication of total dark damage. So if you use this buff on a normal weapon or a weapon that, has lets say, normal and fire damage, u will only get about 65 dark damage (50 raw +30% from multiplication) and that's it. But if instead you apply the buff on a weapon infused with dark (lets say the weapon has 100 normal damage and 100 dark damage), you will get an increase in dark damage of about 95, for a grand total of 100 normal and 195 dark damage on the said weapon. So in conclusion, you can buff any weapon, but to get the most out of it you should buff weapons that already have the type of damage as your buff does.

Yep, felt that it works that way when i tried to buff Fire Longsword with Magic Weapon but it didn't improve with neither upgrading catalyst or the weapon itself, neither with more INT. Didn't know then that it works differently from DSI.

No guys, you're wrong. It doesn't matter what the weapon is infused with, you could buff a magic-infused weapon with dark weapon and the damage would be on par with a dark-infused and -buffed one.
Don't believe me? Search this board for #Science

The exception are innate elemental damage weapons, in their case a fitting buff helps. Try it out with a lightning resin and then an aromatic ooze on a blue flame.

As a sidenote, some wikis are already updated, some aren't. Example: http://darksouls2.wikidot.com/sunlight-blade (updated, that page also links to a reddit thread which backs the debunk of the common belief "+50 *1.x" up) - http://darksouls2.wiki.fextralife.com/Dark+Weapon (NOT updated)

fextralife is pretty bad. wikidot should almost always be the wiki of choice for details like this.
Ok, so buffing weapons with different elements is still working but buffing weapons with the same elements works a bit better. Except for flame weapons.

The damage-difference is redundant and only really noticable when the target has differently spread resistances.
It kinda works better because buff-duration is tied to a stat, and you still get like 30-40 AR elemental scaling while leveling Int or Fth to the softcap, so it makes sense to pick one element to go with as you gain both a (very) little AR-increase and a longer buff-duration for leveling the related stat up.
Ok, i got it all. Thanks guys.
