If you want to do coop you need to use the white soapstone or the small white soapstone. The red soapstone is to invade other players. Also, the boss has to be alive if you want to do coop.

like we know that, i was just wondering if I can summon a red phantom if the boss of the area is dead.

No, doesn't matter.

You probably had the effigy-effect which prevents you from seeing any signs or being invaded for half an hour. You get it by burning an effigy at a bonfire (obviously) or by killing a boss.

all normal soapstone users cannot be summoned if the boss is alive. the dragon eye is an exception to this. the small white soapstone can summon if the boss is dead, but the human effigy effect is nullified. i'd say either ascetic the place or use a dragon eye if you want to duel with someone specific.

.... Not sure what the hell these guys are talking about, but yeah it doesnt matter if the boss is dead or alive to summon people using a red sign. If a human effigy is in effect you will not see any of them, so double check at the bonfire, because killing a boss does in fact put a human effigy into effect on the bonfire. If you are seeing signs and it just isnt working when you try to summon it could be because someone else beat you to it, or just some strange connection issues

No, you're wrong once again. The only thing that requires you to be have the area-boss alive is the regular white sign soapstone. No other thing. Literally nothing else.
