I guess it's to make new players think they'll die there.

Always wondered why there are so many bloodstains there. How do people kill themselves? Is there a command for that? Or do they wear symbol of avarice or a similar item?

They commit sedoku with the katana that they can stab themselves with, when you touch the bloodstains you just see like 8 guys stab themselves.

Coming from ds1, I was expecting a hard tutorial boss like the asylum demon. Then I touched the stains and was like, wtf is this!?

The setpuku sword is called "Bewitched Alonne Sword," It's one of the boss soul weapons from one of the DLCs, and its special ability(two handed parry button) is stabbing one's own stomach(sacrifices approx 20% of your health) to cover your blade with your blood to buff it for approx 30 sec.
