Why no love for the Large Club?
The only downside that I can see in it is its durability. It pancakes most opponents in the game even in the dlc areas with a 2 handing R2. Weighs about half as much as a Greatsword and I think it swings quicker and does more poise damage than most other weapons in the game. Plus, most of the toughest enemies have less resistance to strike damage.

On my strength build I started out with a large club and and then to the giant club. At 42 strength I am powerstancing them. Relatively light load(50%) so that I have good roll distance and quick stamina recovery.

So now I am going through the Ivory King dlc with my sorc on NG+. I don't need to tell anyone how much resistance the mobs in this area are to magic. So I am experimenting with different weapons and the best one I can find is a large club. Large club +10 infused with fire and using flame weapon. I am 2 handing it with a character with 20 strength. Backstabs are instant death to anything that can be backstabbed. Most enemies get pancaked with a R2 and then its just a R1 to finish them off.

I used to think that it was more of a starter weapon. I'm starting to think that it may take me to NG+7.

If you level str for the scaling its perfectly viable. I used it pretty expensively on my first playthrough.

Its more of a scaling weapon, but if you don't have high str it might still benefit from infusion. But I don't think the nice strike damage multiplier applies to the elemental half of your damage.

Have you tried the much shat upon Bluemoon greatsword? Its a bit heavy, but at 14 str and 10 dex you can 2 hand it for ~530 total AR infused with elemental or 431 raw. If you do lighting or magic it should clean house in brume tower. just make sure you attune repair.

The problem is that even though it has one of the best scalings in the game, it still doesn't even surpass i.e. the Great Club's damage. It's just a tad heavier and needs like 2 more Strength while having significantly better base power and less need for scaling.

Yeah, it's actually pretty neat, but the thing that scares me off is the insane stamina-consumption. The Mastodon GS seems to have a crazy need for stamina, too, and it's even heavier (although also stronger at high Strength).

All greatswords are garbo. Get a dark ice rapier and make pve a joke.

The damage difference between great and large clubs isn't that much, it also weighs less which definitely counts, you can take along along an extra 4 weight weapon for versatility with a large club over the great club.

I +10'd a large club because it looks a lot better for fashion souls and besides both are superseded by other clubs like the Dragons tooth which I currently use which is better than both in damage and has 50 magic + 50 fire res.

In terms of utility large clubs/great hammers with a str build will utterly wreck almost anything in PVE including all the NPC invaders and most bosses, they can also be used extremely well 1 handed with a shield due to their awesome one handed R1 crushing attacks.

Not much luck in PVE with them so far unless you get lucky with spamming R1's like I've done with a few and crush them in 3 or 4 hits, but most invaders have been butterfly poison kids so not much chance to test a fair fight.
