Too many enemies, and I get gang-&&&&& every time I try to fight. I ran out of life gems a long time ago, and I just don't know what to do. I keep getting souls, then dying to the monkey-f*cks. I can't level, and can't win. I know I'll get it eventually, but what can help speed up my trip through this godawful hellhole?

You could go get your souls and go back to lvl up or buy life gems. Using a torch could make things easier. Getting a better weapon or upgrade yours is also usefull.
If you really don't wanna do it just go back and explore other places.

You've got a torch time counter at yout inventory. Every time you get one you get 5 min of that torch. To light that it go to any bonfire or any place with a torch with fire and light yours. Then go close to another torch that you can light, any around the map, and it'll remain with fire forever till you start NG+.

Advance carefully and get the small npc summon sign on the pier. Avoid the viking hq in the middle for now. Should let you have some progress.
This is the early game part, where turtling with a medium shield is still viable. Just aggro the enemies one by one, if possible.

If you are really patient, you can use a torch and a crossbow. That's how I did it and it was slow and cheesy. That's the way I like it.

light the torch at the bonfire by walking up to it and pressing Y or equivalent. It will switch from "sit at bonfire" to "light torch."

The monkey dudes will cover their faces and cower if you have a torch in your left hand.

also, the NPC summon on the dock is really handy if you have an effigy to spare.

use soapstone in previous levels and farm souls to level up more. I know this level was a ♥♥♥♥♥, but i found that helped.

Also try to light up all the sconces on your way with a torch. That way you can always light up your torch from them later if you need to. Another option for a light source is to use Cast Light sorcery as that will keep the Dark Stalkers away from you. If you have extra Pharros Lockstones try to activate that contraption and it will illuminate the area for you quite nicely and also force the Dark Stalkers to hide inside the buildings. Just move slowly and try to shoot those Varangian sailors hanging from those piers as you go.

If Dark Stalkers cause too much trouble you can just run past them and avoid them because you don't have to kill them all to finish that area. Remember to talk to Mr. Gavlan near the shortcut too!

The best thing you could do is have enough stats to use a bow and snipe/aggro enemies from a distance with your bow. Take it slow. Kill each enemy tactfully. Don't underestimate the dogs in that one center area. Take them out invidiually (after you kill all the varangian guys inside that room). Also towards the end of the map there's two "suspicious shadows". They're assassins. Really quick and throw poison darts. They have really little poise though so just block appropriately and then bash them with your weapon repeatedly.

to be honest, you can run through most of it if you know how the enemies behave. I do it all the time when I twink as that is a level I need to get past while getting souls for kills. The best way to speed up your trip is to learn the enemies. I can help you if your SM is low enough.
