Red Phantom at undead purgatory.
I am really having trouble with him. I can onehit my way with my mace trough the entire level ( at least while backstabbing), but as soon as I get to him I am as good as dead. His greatsword kills me in two hits, and due to his skill to 180° around, I cant get a backstab on him either. He also has a shield on his back, not sure how that affects his backstab viability.

Additionally, the area I get to fight in is small, so I cant whip out a bow and get him from afar, as he closes in really fast and has high range.

I am using a mace along with a tower shield. Any strategy on how to kill him?

A shield on your back wont safe you from backstabs at all and this counts for red's too. Do you want to do it by yourself or did you think of summoning someone to kill him in a 2v1 bc im pretty sure he wont respawn in NG.

Actually the best strategy is not to kill him. You get nothing and I am quite sure that he spawns endless. Or at least many times.
Anyway we all hate that guy.

Forlorn? He's not that hard at all. You'll get him eventually or just ignore him.

You think he means Forlorn? I thought it sounds more like the red guy standing infront of the fog door to the boss fight, the on after the longe bridge.

They are all the same to me aside from that witch Fencer Sharron and maybe Dennis.

So I eventually did it by running out of his range, firing a fire arrow into his back and repeating. I feel cheap af right now but at least I can progress.

I had a problem with Forlorn earlier, but I managed to get him with a friend. I was, in fact talking about the greatsword wielding guy guarding the entrance to the arena.

>>> He does not respawn after being killed. No idea about NG+ tho.

I will be remembering this for later, so thanks!

If you just jump across to either of the two platforms of the side of the bridge he can't reach you, that lets you cheese him with impunity. Just watch your step when jumping back, that's kinda iffy since you might roll off the bridge and die if you have too much speed.

He does respawn in further NGs

My bad, I am so used to NG+s that I didn't even remember he doesn't spawn in NG

For next time, he's not too bad if you have a weapon with decent range and can break his poise. Don't use the mace against Invaders or reds.

Another pro tip is to use pancake attacks. NPC reds are quite bad at avoiding them. Plus they don't normally roll when they get up, so you can continue to pound them into the floor with well timed 2hr2s.

Use weapon with nice balance damage (30-40) or stone ring. And, ofcourse, rolling right or left of his face and try to backstab him, when he lost all his stamina on hits.

Since you seem to use str weapons, get a Great Hammer with the slam 2h r2. This attack makes NPC phantoms extremely easy.

Since that enemy is using a Greatsword his attacks are really predictable making parrying it a very viable option even for players who don't often parry and/or are bad at it. The only thing that sucks about him is that he is so far away from the closest bonfire that if you mess up your going to have to walk all that distance again. If you don't want to try and parry him I would suggest using a 100% Physical shield and a spear. Just make sure to watch your stamina and you can poke him without taking any damage.
