What, like Thrusting Swords? Spears? Lances? They all work very well even without shields.
Thrusting Swords are DPS kings, and will stomp most of the game with incredibly high damage over a short period of time. The basic Rapier is available early and can carry you to the end, although the Espada Ropera is a straight upgrade in all terms but weight but only available once you can take on the final boss. The Estoc, available at the same time as the Basic Rapier, is a lot better for PvP with the special swinging attacks. However, it has much worse counter damage which hurts it in PvE.
Also, the Ice Rapier exists.
Spears have really nice range and thier rolling attacks do blunt damage so you can hit enemies resistant to thrust with great damage anyways. Easily the weakest of the three thrusting weapons, there are really three spears to consider for physical builds. Pate's Spear has the most damage behind it for normal spear gameplay and some Lance attacks to switch things up, and can be gotten at Earthen Peak if you summon Pate for the Last Giant. Partizan has horizontal swings ideal for PvP. And the Gargoyle Bident is the absolute most damaging Spear with Thrusting Sword Counter Damage, but only if you invest in strength.
Lances are giant spears that trade speed and the blunt rolling attack for damage. Sheer damage, and 160% Counter Damage, which is Chaos Blade-tier. And best of all, you can get a Grand Lance after you beat the Last Giant in Scholar and proceed to stomp everything with your stupid high base damage since that weapon was available in the giant memories in the base game.
However, I would recomend you still put a good buff shield, or weapon, on your back if your two-handing most things.
