Anno 1404 and Gameranger
Just wanted to make a post for anyone who struggled to get it to work with the Steam version of the game.

My Ubi account got corrupted and i'm unable to access multiplayer, so in order to be able to play with my friend we wanted to use Gameranger and play by creating a fake local network through Gameranger.

Trying to add Venice to Gameranger gives you an invalid selection however, but no issue for my friend, and I realized the difference was that she was using the GOG version and I use the Steam version.

So what I ended doing was replicate the GOG path that my friend had and put my files in there.

C:\GOG Games\Anno 1404 Gold Edition\

Now I was able to add it to Gameranger without issue and am able to join and host games through there.. maybe this will help if there happens to be anyone who has that issue.

Actually, you are correct. I had it backwards. I guess I was adding people beneath me because that's where my name was. Makes sense now because only the large boxes have the option to add AI players.

So those seeking help, do exactly opposite of what I wrote :)

Is this the regular 1404 or the History Edition? I purchased both of these on Ubisoft and can't play any multiplayer. When I host a game, my friend and I both start on the same ship at the same town and can both move the ship. It's stupid. I've read this issue from others.

Are you sure you're not joining the same team accidentally?

I figured out the issue. The lobby for starting multiplayer is not very intuitive. Yes, we were selecting the wrong buttons.

Alright cool, think they didn't improve upon that at all either with the new edition so it's not really up to date with what we're currently used to I guess.

Let me add more detail as I have seen many posts of players having the same issue and this just may help someone:

When launching multiplayer, you are presented with the lobby where your portrait is displayed to the left. To its right are three large panels with a plus symbol. Hovering over one gives the option of adding a player or AI. This would intuitively seem the correct thing to do, but it isn't. Beneath your portrait is your name in a wide short panel. Beneath this are three more small panels, also with plus symbols. These are the ones you need to add additional players to, not the large panels above.

Hope this clears it up for someone.

[EDIT] Got the panels backward. Do the opposite, use the large panels.

Hello TE5LA, thank you for your replies and workarounds., I'll mark this thread as answered now you have explained how to set up a multiplayer match in the menu.

For anyone who may be checking out this thread, I just wanted to make it clear that Anno 1404 (the original non-history edition version of the game) is no longer playable online via our official servers.

There may be some workarounds posted about this using server emulator programs players have posted in these forums, but this isn't something we are able to advise on being a 3rd party program.

Currently, only the Anno 1404 History Edition version of the game is able to connect to our official online servers, with the rest of the History Edition games in the series too.
