This month I released only one one version with some minor fixes. Then I started to work on yellow/red cards and injuries and I'm still working on this today. I highly underestimated the effort to implement the red card logic system.

Here the full changelog and some more information of the only version released this month.

v0.8.5 Godot upgrade and bugs fixed

Red card rules in Futsal

The red card rules for Futsal are a bit more complex than for Football. Instead of playing the whole match with one player less, there is only a 2 minutes penalty. Once the penalty is over, the team can substitute the suspended player with another one. The substitute can enter the field earlier, if the opponent team scores a goal. Except the scoring team is also playing with less players due to red cards. In that case nothing special happens and the 2 minutes penalty timer keeps running.

While this might not sound too complicated to implement, it was in my case. The main problem was that the match engine expected that a team has an list filled with 5 players. Now with a red card, that is no longer the case and I had to refactor quite some code. I also had to adapt the whole player changing system and logic. The cool thing: substitutes wait now in the change zone, for the other player to leave the field. This also means that not all substitute will enter the same time. Changes can now also be done while the clock is running.

Additionally there was the "match buffer" issue that I also had to solve. The match engine currently uses a buffer, where all player positions and match events are saved. The match UI only shows the "oldest" buffer entry, while the match engine is already "in the future". This way when a key action or goal happens in the future, the action can be shown. But with red cards or injuries, the user needs to react immediately. Therefore I had to the buffer to jump to the latest entry in such case. This cuts out the buffered seconds, but was the only and easiest way I found to implement this.

Additionally the UI also needed changes, like showing the penalty timers for teams and players. Now it is also possible to bring less than 14 players to a match. Therefore the formation view was updated a works differently now.

The next version

I really hope that the version v0.8.6 will be released very soon. I won't give a time estimate, because I did that already many times and I was always wrong. But at least at the time of writing, the red card system works. Therefore I just need to polish the UI and make some more tests, to be sure everything works.

Two new languages (coming soon)

This month 2 new languages have been added to the game: Persian and Khmer. I also had to add a new font, to support Khmer script. Thanks a lot to all translation contributors, for making this game accessible to so many users!

Sadly I was not yet able to release the new languages, because I'm blocked with the red cards. Only good thing: I learned now that adding a new features can block others from being released. Therefore from the next version, I will start to work on feature branches. That way the main branch only contains tested and verified code. If new languages are added or critical bugs are found, I can release update much faster easier.

Currently known bugs

There are 2 bugs that currently haunt the game

Unable to open game on Motorola g20
Editor crash when generating players on newly created data pack

Bug 1. happens due to Godot 4.7.1 bug about the platform entropy polling for some Android devices. More details on this can be found on Github at the related issue[github.com]. This will be fixed with v0.8.6, that will ship Godot 4.7.2 with the bug resolved.

Bug 2. will also be fixed with v0.8.6. Anyways if someone happens to face this bug, simply save the data pack and reload it. With this workaround there will be no crash.

Again, now I will use feature branches, so that such critical bugs can be fixed immediately.

Road to v1.0

Everything is still in time and v1.0 is planned for November. Even with the big delay I had this month, there should still be enough time.

Next feature will be player training and probably the club boards. Once done, I will evaluate if national teams will be part of v1.0 or not. I need time to test and play the game intensively before the full release. Therefore it highly depends on how much time is left to test and polish. The last new features will be added at start of October. After that there will be a feature freeze, to have time for testing and polishing.

So after playing 4 seasons with Portimao and getting them from the 3rd Portuguese league to the 1st Portuguese league and winning the Portuguese cup I seem to have hit a wall because I don't have enough money to pay the wages of good players and my sponsor income doesn't rise. Obviously, I don't understand how everything works, so maybe this is my fault but here are some suggestions of what I would like to see in future versions: Wishlist (ranked from very important to me to "nice to have") --------------...

Devlog July 2026

I released now 12 monthly devlogs since August 2025 blog on https://99managers.org/blog but from now on, I'll post them also here on Steam.

From the surface July seems very calm, with only two versions released. But behind the scenes a lot happened, especially the project got the very first code contribution. The game itself was improved a lot regarding the player transfer functionality.

Note: I just realized this is devlog number 12, with the first one dating back to August 2025. Happy birthday to this devlog :-)

First code contributor

Since July the project got also the very first code contributor! Novarama[codeberg.org] created this nice looking graph to show how the balance evolves over the weeks.

They also implemented the release fee logic, when a player is released. Now that can longer be done for free, but the remaining salary has to be payed to the player.

It makes me really happy to see other developers reading and understating my code. Alongside the over 60 translation contributors that are actively translating the game. I hope more contributors will join in future too, making it a community developed project :-) Thanks a lot to all the contributors <3

New transfer features

Now a dedicated transfer list exist, where the user can set the transfer state for own players. This makes it easier to sell players or define that a player should not get any offers. It is also possible to loan players now and everything can be set in the new transfer list view.

Team roles where also introduced, defining what role a player will have in a team. The current roles are key player, rotation player, reserve, future star and youth player. The team role affects now player morale and also influences transfer and contract negotiations.

30k downloads from Google Play Store

The game was now downloaded over 30.000 times around the world from the Google Play Store! This makes me really happy and also gives me and my games lots of visibility. This is the first time a piece of software written by me got so many users. And this in only 4 months since release on the Google Play Store.

For me it is obvious, but many friends often ask me how much I earn with this downloads. The answer is very simple: Nothing!
Google does not pay anything (just like all other platforms) just for downloads. Apps need to be monetized by the developer, trough ads, micro-transaction or by making it paid.

Personally my goal is to make free and open source games, without any tracking or ads. Therefore for me this is a form of free marketing by making my game visible around the whole world. Maybe one day it will even be possible to buy the game or a special "donation" version on mobile. Until then to support me, the game can be bought on Steam.

F-Droid reproducible Godot updates work

Last month the game was finally released to F-Droid as the very first Godot reproducible build. I was very happy about that, but there was still some fear, that there might be issues with updates. Today I can happily confirm, that the F-Droid pipeline works perfectly, with two updates released. Everything is reproducible and there was no manual intervention or fix needed.

Yesterday I updated the Godot to v4.7.1 and that means I had to manually update the build recipe. Even here, everything is still reproducible and built correctly :-) I just had to change the Godot source code commit hash to the desired version on both sides. With both sides I mean my build Dockerfile and the F-Droid build recipe.

Plan for the next 3 months

The first basic features complete version v1.0 is planned for November this year. That leaves only 3 months to add the last missing pieces

I really hope that these features will be added to the game by October, to have time for testing. v1.0 will be a stable game, therefore it is important to keep some spare time for bug fixes.

Once v1.0 is out, the game will continue to be developed of course. This kind of games have lots of room for improvement and more details. Therefore there will many more features and version follow after v1.0. And some other sport management games of the 99Managers series will be announced very soon. The only thing is that by January, I might need to work part time again, to earn a living. Except the game becomes suddenly a financial success, there's still some time for that... ;-)

I'm back from vacation and just released a small update with some editor bugs fixed. There was an issue with the loading of ids, that resulted in existing data getting overwritten. That has been fixed now, alongside some other minor UI and logic fixes.
Godot has also been upgraded to v4.7.1, but brought no noteworthy changes to the game, for now.

Cannot create custom championship

HI. First off I love the game. I tried to create a two-tier 24-teams championship based in Canada. When I clicked on generate players, teh game crashes to desktop. Is there another way of creating random players for my teams?? Please fix this.

couldd you maybe add something like eg i click into a players profile on page 7 out of 23 and when i click out i go back to pg 7 and not 1. Also to add to this, a compathbility with the return and previous on a mouse button would be class, thank you
