What is the point of the Backups?

Seriously, what is the point of them? My game crashed, and the only save I could load was my save from about 2 hours ago, yet the game saved a backup several times. So why bother having backups if I can't load them when something goes wrong?

Last time it happened to me I had to change the autosave file's extension from something like .asv to .sav, otherwise the game doesn't know it's a save file. Though it would probably be fairly easy to code it to just say "if there's an autosave file but no character file, load the autosave".

Yes, but where is the backup stored? Its not in the same folder as the other saves.

Had a crash once (actualy not a crash, windows decided to restart my pc for updates...) and it recovered a save around 500 turns before the crash. As it autosave evey 1000 turns, it made sense. Crash recovery was far for being bulletproof in the pre stream versions, and I'm pretty sure it won't be either with this version.
