I do the same thing in the unused room in the Lawenilothehl master thief building if needed, especially if I'm delving into the Infinite dungeon or Griff's graveyard (you don't want to take a ton of sis in the infinite dungeon, if you try to leave them they will all go right back in your pack once you move to another level).
Supplementary question - Smithing at Darkforge feasible?
II have artefact armour with resistance to background corruption (Chainmail of Martyred Crusader). Not sure if that's enough.
It's feasible, but should you? That's up you you. Darkforge has two main drawbacks, the background corruption and mobs. It's much better to find a forge in a low-danger area.
My personal favorite forge, if I can't find one in a low danger area and you don't want to mess with Glod, is in the Ice Queen prison. If you don't open the prison cells, no mobs will wander into the locked room. so you can store gear there as well. Of course, you have to get by all the other Ice Queen levels; with invisibility and a means of levitation/swimming it's pretty easy, as this area is accessible by level 15. Make sure you have plenty of food, wear the amulet of free action throughout, and don't kill the "good" mobs in the ice domain.
As for the DF mobs I was gonna try building a mini -fortress of locked doors around one forge. But I guess some of the mechs can bash them down.
But yeah, ice Queens forge is what I've used in a previous game. Took a while to clear it though.
