Tome of the Donors
I try to get the Tome of the Donors every game now. It has changed my early game. I'll do some mix of Small Cave/Kranach/Puppy Cave/Beginner's and then go out to find it, even skipping an early UD dive.

It is a gamble as far as food and time is concerned: and it might end with the dungeon being locked behind mountains. Most of the time though, I find the Moldy Dungeon in time and get the ToTD out intact.

Now it is incredibly heavy so what I usually do is read it a couple times as I make my way down to Dwarftown and then leave it nearby and read again everytime I pass. The effects can be very minor.. to not so minor. Check out my most recent Priest character:

The paralyze/death and confusion resist all came from a read in the tome "You feel well prepared!".

What do you think of the tome? Any tips? Has it changed your game?

It's crazy powerful, and can give you resistance to the most annoying things in the game. I don't really change my early game for it though, I pretty much still do dd/vd, PC, smc/ud, pyramid, cc. I just hunt around for it somewhere in between PC and cc.

I'm going to put this in in case a newer player reads this post. I can't recommend going straight for the Moldy Dungeon, there's no need.

I must have had a lucky series of games playing this way.

But then I had a series of characters who had food problems, or were jumped by high level creatures while looking at it so I have changed my plan.

Now I do some combination first level of the Puppy dungeon, beginners' dungeon, and the village quest dungeon before looking for Moldy Dungeon. Even if the dungeon is out of the way the latest I have gotten there is day 16.
