Mining?
So does this game allow you to actually mine? i.e you need to dig particular materials to build certain blocks? Can you dig underground and discover hidden caves and things like that?

You can break blocks and tear apart the terrain, but you don't need to collect certain types of ore.

No hidden caves, no mining.
An underground cave network is planned down the line, but no, this is not a mining game.
It's not minecraft. It doesn't have mining and it doesn't have crafting. Hence the name of LEGO Worlds and not LEGOcraft or InfiniLEGOer 2: the Electric Craftaloo.

I suspect that a deeper game will have to be addded. When underground caves are put in place, there will NEED to be a reason to explore them or else...why are they there?

Sure, some people will explore an underground cave (or make their house there) just to say they did it. But most (a guess) people will want a reason or reward for exploring.

Perhaps LEGO will add in rare LEGO blocks (Clear blue blocks for example) that you will be required to find in those caves?

Or maybe there will be a crafting system, and LEGO Technic blocks will be what you craft, by using "recipes" you find in those caves.

TL;DR There NEEDS to be a reason to explore caves.

I think without a mining element the challenge from the game will be gone. minecraft, for me, is much about the process and journey i go through to obtain certain materials so i can build stuff. If this game doesn't have anything like this, the creating element will soon get boring as there needs to be some sort of challenge, a reason to explore and such. otherwise you could simply stay in one spot.
