Let's talk about the building mechanics
So while people are getting caught up in suggestions for future features and bug reports, I thought it would be worthwhile to start a thread about the current mechanics of building structures that are in game right now. What people like or dislike about them, etc--not just "add this feature for a star wars theme in the future please"

Obviously people are going to make major comparisons to Minecraft, so I'll start by noting that the build mode is quite distinct-you aren't manually targeting and placing each block in a first person view, but instead utilizing a third person birds eye. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages--it's great being able to see exactly where your other blocks are all over the structure for symmetry and other issues that arise when building on a large scale in Minecraft, but it also feels more awkward at times and less gamey. The ability to shape terrain, use colours, etc, are great.

There are a few awkward controls I find. When attempting to select a block using the drag feature, for example, you can't just switch back over to placing blocks on the side menu-you have to re-select the drag feature to deactivate it. The camera movement is also a bit slow I find.

Anyone else have thoughts on it?

I don´t know if i am the only one having this problem but every time i try to place a prop(the ones that you are able to destroy and get money out of it) it floats like one brick in the air.
Thats a little bit annoying. And the Zoom Funktion in already suggested.
I think the Minecraft way to build is better , building in lego worlds is to hard for young kids who play with real lego and they can go straight into minecraft and start building a lot easier

In lego worlds movement when building is to fast , camera is shaky , far to complicated controls .

Since lego is all about building if they don't sort out controls this game will be no where near as big as it could be .
[edit} Remember this is targeted at kids so building needs to be fun and easy and quick. For people who want more advanced building use LDD then import building into game

Totally right. A very good point!
I hope you also implement these adjustable bricks. the one you use to make inclined planes

I think we need a zoom in/out mechanic and better highlight for placing pieces.
Yes for me the playability and buildability of this game will hinge on fluid and feature-rich camera mechanics.
I haven't built yet, since there are just basic blocks, but I think a LDD way of build will do
I think a Walk button both for animals and characters is needed sometimes. Like walking around an area with your character.
The tunneler and the bulldozer are difficult to work with. Seems some simple operations are taking me a LOT of effort...try hollowing out a cavern from a subway tunnel and putting a road down it. I am finding ways but as I say it seems to take a lot of work when the scale is large. Like excavation scale. Very large (terrain) tools, and very fine tools brick-level) are great tho.

Maybe it's more that I am just used to other sim games where roads are a snap?

I have found the same maybe when you are in vehicle it should slow down and shift for fast
i would like to see more custom building, no auto-build. creating things peut-a-peut, reconstruct some parts etc is lego for me. as a kid, i rarely build the strucures lego had planned. so, maybe part-building (eg for a house), a wall here, another wall there, flat roof, normal roof, wooden, stony... only transparent, no windows... so this auto-build function is way to powerful and doesnt create real lego feeling for me...
for my last point: i dont like the flymode, should be little bit more "my character / i build that" and not "my gun shot x bricks"
Maybe bricks shouldn't be free, but collected? There can be an icon you can click on to see all the different types and how many you have collected (up to a certain maximum each). That would make breaking structures or drilling more useful.
This would allow for an Architect Table (or Workbench mode) where you can virtually create a building and save it to a Blueprint you can carry around with you. Maybe the Blueprint would have a tiny image of your contruct; it should also tell you how many pieces of each type of bricks you need to collect; when you have collected all the pieces you need, you USE the Blueprint and the lego person would do his little "build" animation from previous games to actually build the structure.
Maybe as a bonus, he will level out the terrain "for free" as needed to support the structure?
Also, maybe that would allow for NPC lego people (or actual users) to sell their Blueprints in shops for studs (no contructing skills needed)!

I don't know if someone said this before (probably did) but I think it would be helpful if in build mode each block was labeled. Like 2 studs by 4 studs by 1 high could be 2x4x1, or something like that. Sorry if someone already suggested this.

That's the entire brick building mode? You place each brick separately.

@mPicart
While custom blueprints are needed, turning it into a gather brick game is a nightmare when you consider how many bricks you need to build things, the variety, etc.

@jonfin

A lot of people have, but the more people who do, the more the devs will look into it (I hope)
I may be speaking about something that has already been talked about, but,
-the cursor lags behind the mouse.
-when controlling a vehicle controls are a little clunky when looking at the car, The back button doesn't mean you will go back it just means which ever way you are looking at the car. It is a little clunky and awkward.
I feel there should be a first person mode. The third person works great on large models and above ground but delicate placement and underground building is difficult.
