SOLVED - Big Big Big problem with building in game
Edit for those who have trouble figuring out how the new camera works :

Originally posted by TT Chris Payne:
Hi - Chris here, I work at TT on the camera logic. Sorry you're finding it frustrating, Arkelia - thought it might help short-term if I explain why this is happening.

The camera assumes that the editor crosshair is what you're interested in. So when something blocks your view of the crosshair, the game slices away the intervening bricks to give you a clear view of it. As someone correctly surmised above, this was intended to help with editing inside caves and buildings.

But in this case you happen to have the editor crosshair slightly *behind* the wall that you're working on with the mouse cursor, so the game makes the wrong assumption and "helpfully" slices the wall away. As a workaround, if you position the crosshair in front of or inside the wall, it won't slice anything and you can zoom right in for close-up work.

We're working on improving the camera behaviour so that it "just works" in the majority of cases. Your feedback helps, thanks!

--------------------------------------------

I wanted to go back building my wild west town now that I had fun discovering the content you added with the update.

You did some work for the camera, mostly so the cave won't be a pain to visit I guess.
But it broke building :(

Or maybe it was intended but you didn't tried to build with it to see it's just a pain.

Bricks disappear when we are near them. But they disappear to early !
Now I need to play with my camera veeery far away from my model or I can't see on what I am working. I'm a woman of detail so I need close up to be sure I do right what I want.

Illustration of my problem :

I hope I'm not the only one thinking this is not how it should work.
I have to play veeeery far away from my wall to be able to finish it ! Tell me this isn't WAI ! :[

Please, pretty please could you correct this as soon as you can ?

I can't play with this camera it's breaking all my fun and building was THE thing that made me play so much to this game.

It works for me, it did take some time getting used to but the distance I need to keep isn't too much for me to comfortably work on exterior details, that being said I'm using a 32 Inch screen so I'm probably a bit spoiled in that area.

Judging by your screenshots you are working with a sub 1080p resolution so if the camera is an issue for smaller screens it does need some work. Maybe the easiest solution would be a button to temporarily disable the cut away feature on the building camera when it isn't suitable for the job at hand.

My issue is that the interface is far too large, which obviously doesn't hinder building like your problem.

Yea they should for sure add an option to view the exterior at all times, sims has something for that as I recall.

Atm I prefered how it worked before as a bat. I'm so disapointed ! :(
I play on a 21" screen, it doesn't seem that small for me :/

The UI is too large too I agree.

The way the camera worked previously made building in tight interiors a battle with the camera, I often ended up dismantling walls just to make changes to an interior. The new camera solved that for me but I get how it's counterproductive if you want to work up close on an exterior.

Are you certain your 21" screen doesn't support a 1920x1080 resolution? It would add 40% more pixels compared to the 1600x900, perhaps not enough to solve the problem entirely but it should mitigate it somewhat.

21" screen supports it yes. I'm in 1600x900 to play in windowed mode. Alt tabbing was messing up my second screen (sometimes I would get a black screen on my second monitor when I go back to the game.. and I use my second screen a lot with sketches or pictures to guide me while building :o)

As a bat the camera could go inside a building without to much trouble I was doing ok with it not optimal I would say, but better than working from miles away. Also I didn't try to build with another character.. maybe the bat is messing things now... Who knows.

I'll try with 1920x1080.

The sims option that mentioned Kek seems quite nice. I hope it will inspire TTgames.

You should be able to set windowed borderless at full resolution. Acts like fullscreen but has the smooth alt+tabbing of windowed.

I completly missed the borderless option, back to 1920x1080 !

So after some tests with full resolution windowed and borderless, I think I nailed the problem :

My building got some kind of balcony (it's not the right word, but I can't put an english word to it, sorry ! ^^ Un haut vent si y'a du français dnas le coin).
When the camera hits this balcony *puff* bricks disappear...

So if I work my camera slightly to the corner of the building (but not right on the corner, it will cause the same problem) so it doesn't collapse with the balcony and I can close up more.

To illustrate this camera angle here my best close up :
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=479226871
and if I turn the camera a bit...
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=479226964

I still can't close up like I used to, but it's more playable for my eyes.
And I still think I had less problem before the update (I could go inside my building with the bat form of the vampire without too much trouble, less than today, where I have to be very precise with my camera now).

I think all around that this game mode has still a long way to become really friendly to anyone :[
More with smaller screen for those who are playing with a laptop.

Anyway, Thank you all for your feedbacks as I know now how to work around my camera problem and continue my town *\o/*

Arkelia! since you build in-game have you ever saved any .savs? or maybe you play in Directx11.
I'm only able to play in Dx9, so my old .sav models are not working with the new update! :(
If you are in DX9 have you encountered this problem?
Plume Jul 10, 2015 @ 6:52pm
I play in DX11 indeed so I can save bigger build.
Maybe I can test your .sav files in DX11. I can DL those from your site and tell you (and if it works I could maybe create a .lxfml file from them but no promise !)
Aloan Jul 10, 2015 @ 6:54pm
(thanks in advance - I only have 6 rocks saved in .savs from the old update) they are:
Rock1.sav
Rock2.sav
Rock4.sav
Rock5.sav
Rock6.sav
pedr1.sav

once I start making them from the new update, the problem will be gone at least for the new .savs - I have asked the Devs today to consider making the DX9 version export .lxfml if it isn't a big of a pain to them! (for the sake of those who don't have a DX11)
I can't understand my OS. It is Windows 7 ultimate and even though it states it has DX11 it does not make use of it and my Hardaware acceleration tab is greyed out! My ♥♥♥♥♥ integrated Graphics card is a radeon 3000 and is updated! :(

Sorry to say I find building so painfully tedious in this game that I've just quit trying to build anything. When another program is recommended to actually do your building in (and then import it), something is seriously wrong.

I feel this game will be seriously short lived if they don't look at how other 'building' games work and stop trying to reinvent the wheel.
An0maly33 Jul 10, 2015 @ 9:58pm
Building is VERY tedious. I can't even figure out how to destroy a couch I accidentally placed.
Aloan Jul 11, 2015 @ 5:15am
I get what you're saying... How hard in coding will it be to just hit a button to place a brick and hit a buton to just destroy that same brick? Yeah the Mc way is the fastest way to build but unfortunately the game did not learn from that! :) - although this building system does have some huge advantages for the bulk sculpting part (terrain editing)!

Dont place props they ruin everything!^^ You can destroy it with a pickaxe, which will destroy part of your building as well and the couch, or any other prop, will most likely come back after reloading the world...

Only thing that worked for me was destroying it with a construction vehicle, its fun using one of these in a building -.-

Are you people building with keyboard and mouse or a game controller? I use the Xbox360 controller and the camera and controls seem ok. I put together a little building to try out the new camera angles and while it does remove some bricks from sight, building in confined spaces is way better than before the update.
