Licensed Products in Lego Worlds
I was just wondering if anyone knows if there has been anything said about licensed products such as Star Wars, Chima, Ninjago, etc in the game at a later date. I just imagine having lot's of the Star Wars sets within the game and playing around with the NPC's and creating battles with Clones and CIS. This game has a lot of potential though, and I hope it doesn't get wasted. I have a lot of hope with TT games, it's a nice company and it would be sad to see this game lose everything.

Licencing is generally quite expensive. I imagine they wont add any licenced stuff like Star Wars or Marvel until this game becomes hugely sucessful and creates enough revenue to buy these expensive licences. They should however be able to add sets such as Chima and Ninjago, since these are owned by the LEGO company, unless I'm mistaken.

The thing is though is that this company should already own the licensed things. They already have made various LEGO Star Wars games and other LEGO super hero oriented games. I'd imagine personally that they already have the license to put them into this game.

I'm no expert on licencing law, but I imagine that the licence is only valid for a specific product (say, one line of LEGO sets or one video game). Each additional product requires a new licence, to avoid stuff like e.g. LEGO milking the Star Wars cash cow for all eternity.

Don't get me wrong though, I would personally love to see the Harry Potter sets in the game!

I've followed all the TT Games since Star Wars: The Complete Saga (game #3). It's my and MANY others opinion that Worlds should remain license free. To many people, the licenses LEGO has been been doing with sets is getting old fast, and of all the non-mobile TT games, there has only been one non-licensed game: LEGO City Undercover. LCU is the most community-praised LEGO game for a single reason: it was entirely based on an original LEGO theme and no licensed content was present. For years and years now, fans have wanted a LEGO game that did not contained licensed content like Batman or Star Wars. That's because Batman/SW does not make up LEGO. LEGO, pure and simple and by itself is an icon and massive draw. IMO, licensed themes are half a gimmick to get more people interested. Worlds would not "lose everything" if it remains license-free. If anything, it gains more respect by the community for being a pure LEGO game and not one that relies on licensed content/characters.

I am aware this is a hot topic, as all most people know are licensed LEGO games. But before TT there were other LEGO games (Island, Racers, Rock Raiders, LOCO + more) and they arguably are remembered more than LEGO Indy Hobbit Wars of the Caribbean 3: The Yearly Adventures in Space. That's partially because they were based on original LEGO themes. If Worlds would remain fully licensed content free (not even DLC) and instead draw on the vast archives of original LEGO sets and themes, both modern and classic (personally, Ninjago, TLM, and Chima don't totally fit that classification, but that's just me), LEGO Worlds would be much more received and appreciated for what it really is and not because it has Batman or Darth Vader in it.

Please TT Games, leave all licensed content out of LEGO Worlds. A large part of the LEGO community would be very grateful and rejoicing if you did.

You have a point. But I'm also sure that some of the praise of the earlier games (Racers, Island, LOCO etc.) is just nostalgia. I know that's a major factor for me and probably for the majority of 90s kids. I love the classic System and Castle sets from the 90s, and I will go to great lengths to explain why those sets are better than the current sets that LEGO makes. But let's be honest here, I'm very biased because those are the sets that I grew up with. Kids that grew up with LEGO Batman or Chima will think that those are the best sets ever. So imo both old and new has it's place in the game.

I only see the other IP's happening as DLC content that folks will have to pay for, and I doubt they will want to pay for it, as they don't seem to want to pay for the base game as it is....

Also it seems to me the folks bedind the game don't want to add a million and a half special pieces that the other IP sets have in them, as none of that is in LDD at all, just the satndard Lego pieces are in LDD, and that seems to be the base of what they are using for the game....

Unless LDD is complealy overhauled to support the odd pieces the other IP's use in them, I don't really see it happening, now Lego sets of the past & current sets ( City, Pirates, Castle, et al ) might get the okay, but Harry Potter, Star Wars, et al, might have to get the okay from the folks who own them, WB / Disney / Marvel, and so on....

Because GAMEPLAY is totally unimportant, I guess?

Agreed. It was well received for its fleshed-out open world, its fun vehicle combat. its humor and voice acting. If it had Han Solo in it, I imagine it would've done even better.

Rebuttal: As a person who has experienced both the licensed and non lego games in the past. Those games which have licensed content usually sell better, and are generally praised for how well they do things. The complaints that users who prefer non licensed use are always the same, this is an action game not a Lego game.

This is true, most of those licensed games ARE action games with a Lego asthetic. However, Lego Worlds is an exploration/building sandbox. Would having licensed content really hurt anything?

Handle it in a simple manner, DLC. Whether free or paid, we can choose to include these things in Lego World if we want, just as we can choose to buy a Batman themed Lego brick set at the local Wal-Mart if we want.

This allows TT the increased sales and monetary gain needed to keep the game growing and vital, and allows those who enjoy a toybox full of cool stuff the option to do so without ruining the experience of the "purists" who don't like their little yellow men to touch other less yellow men in funny costumes. Everyone wins.

Why this is even a debated issue is ridiculous to any normal thinking individual when it can so easily be done both ways at once.

Literally couldn't have said it better. It's what I thought the entire time but I thought to keep my opinion to myself for fear of starting a huge argument amongst people. I really hope they find a way to implement it in best. I just want to enjoy having fun with as many LEGO's as possible. One giant LEGO sandbox and plenty of minifigs to go with it, whether standard LEGO or LP's.

But doesn't LW have to pay ridiculous licencing fees if they want to include licenced content in the game? Or do they get it for free since LEGO already has bought the licences?
Rip Van Winkle X Jul 12, 2015 @ 5:41pm
It's not licencing laws. More like the deals. Depends on how they are aloud to use the licences. It's not they can make WHATEVER star wars or marvel games they want. (Like I am pretty sure the licences deals stops them from putting Marvel and DC together in the same game)
SireNightFire Jul 12, 2015 @ 6:17pm
either way id love to see at least lego star wars make it's way into Lego Worlds
(it would also be awesome to see lego batman and others)

If we are allowed to get every brick there is (like in Digital Designer) and get the possibility to build our own vehicles, we can build whatever we want. You can download the construction manuals for every model (ever sold) online. The only question is: Are the bricks licensed or the models?
But imo licensed bricks aren't even necessary. In the 90s I built my own Spider-Man Universe with the bricks I had. There was no Super Hero theme. All you need is imagination. Well, it's LEGO. If you want to play LEGO you should have plenty of imagination ;)
