Looking to get this game and re-create lego sets I have IRL, does this game have a creative mode?

It's a sandbox game, I'm not sure why it'd need a separate mode for creating things?

Yes. It's called LEGO Digital Designer. It's very intuitive, and has the most trashtastic Field of View that I've ever experienced in a piece of CAD software.

This game is great for designing original builds, but it lacks the variety of bricks to build real LEGO sets.

What do you think this is, LEGO Universe? You have all of the game's bricks and colors from the start. You don't have any props and need to collect those, but you can't build anything or do much with props, anyways.

Hi there - at the moment you won't be able to perfectly re-create your favourite sets, because we currently don't support every brick as CommanderRed points out. We're working on supporting more though. And, like Alcom Isst says, you don't have to grind for the bricks you use in the Brick Building tool. Finally, if you like the LEGO Digital Designer, you can import models from it - just be aware that if you use unsupported bricks the game will attempt an approximation. I hope that helps!
